Reply to note on Oxymoron's talk page

[edit]

Hello Mr. Whiskers, I noticed your note to Oxymoron, and I've actually written a tutorial for new editors that helps them understand policies and guidelines, needed to fight vandalism, and goes into the proper way to notify editors, when to warn, what templates to use, and when to report, as well as how. I invite you to read through it to learn more about Wikipedia itself, as well as how to handle edits that are not constructive. You can find the essay here. I hope this is helpful! ArielGold 16:06, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome also from me; and thanks Ariel for the quick reply  :) --Oxymoron83 20:30, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting Content: CheapAssMTA

[edit]

The only content I am deleting is to remove the name of CheapAssMTA's links as a consequence of the speedy deletion of the article of the same name. I was simply reverting until I could no longer do so, and had to delete text. If I am doing something wrong, or handling it in the wrong way, please let me know specifically and in detail. If I am not, would you p[lease remove the tag on my talk page, and an apology would be even nicer. Thank you for keeping watch. Bielle (talk) 16:57, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You did get started with an apology on my page. :-). Now, it would be good if you would undo any reversions of what I did, so that I don't have to do it all over again. Thanks. May I suggest that, before you put a warning on a user's page, you check out how long they have been here and what they usually do, before you add a tag. You could also ask a question or be sure that you have read the "Edit Summaries" before you tag. Vandals are not usually long-time users with lots of contributions, though it has been known to happen. Newly opened accounts, often unregistered, but not always, are more likely to be vandals that long-time users. This is a generalization, of ourse, but checking before you tag is a good idea. People's free time is wasted in dealing with improperly tagged vandalism, just as it is with vandalism itself, though the former, we hope, is a learning activity. Now my morning's work period has been used up in reverting inappropriate text, and writing to you. I hope both activities turn out to have been useful, especially if you undo what you have undone of mine. Thanks Bielle (talk) 17:13, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why vandalizm warning

[edit]

Seems you are very bored. I added an iw to Template:MONTH only and corrected the French interwiki there because it showed to fr:Modèle:MONTH instead of fr:Modèle:MONTHISO what's the name in frwp. There isn't any reason for vandalizm warning. --Michalwiki (talk) 17:02, 21 November 2007 (UTC) (alias 89.51.210.106)[reply]

Adoption

[edit]

I shall be happy to adopt you. Marlith T/C 17:12, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! First, I think you should read the links in the welcome template to know the core rules and what WP is about. I am here everyday and live in Pacific Time, so you know when to talk to me. Thanks! Marlith T/C 17:15, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, what browser do you use. If you use Firefox, Camino, Opera or Safari I believe that I might have a JavaScript for you. Marlith T/C 17:21, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/MONTH

[edit]

Hi. I was wondering why this AfD nomination was set-up? You have stated no reason for the nomination and I don't think it's been created properly. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 17:22, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

[edit]

That was funny! You certainly can do a lot for someone who has only been here for a very little time. A barnstar, even if undeserved, is certainly a much nicer addition to my page than an inappropriate vandal warning. Thanks for the chuckle. Bielle (talk) 17:23, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Afd on Britten-Norman Defender

[edit]

Em... Hi. Can you explain why you added an AfD template to Britten-Norman Defender? When there is no open AfD discussion? You also noted no reason for adding the AfD template in the Edit Summary, and you did so without nominating for deletion (in the log) according to the policy. I have removed the template for now. Please consider reading more on the AfD process (and following it) before reposting. Guliolopez (talk) 17:42, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. You seem to be trying to walk before you can run. I suggest you leave delete tags alone until you understand the (annoyingly complex) process. Welcome to Wikipedia... settle in and do some editing before you try getting stuff deleted. --Dweller (talk) 18:06, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome (and a few ideas)

[edit]

Hi Mr.Whiskers. As Dweller has said above (and a few other people have commented on your talk page), you need to slow down a little bit and learn a bit more about what Wikipedia is about. In particular, you need to learn about what we think of as "good faith edits", good articles, etc.

A lot of the editors that you have "warned" for vandalism have not vandalised pages at all. Take this poor guy who you slapped a vandal warning on. All this person was doing was clarifying some dates in an article. This is not vandalism. It's just a small change and happens all the time. In the same way, this unfortunate anon was only making minor language and naming corrections to one article.

Your good intentions are obvious, and it is true that vandalism can be a problem in this project - however you are focusing your energies in the wrong places.

One of the ideas we like here the most is that we assume that other people are also working with the same good intentions that we have ourselves, and so we only resort to vandal warnings (and article deletions) for things that are really inappropriate.

So. As Dweller has advised. Consider learning a little bit more about what the project is about, how people treat each other on the project, and think a little bit harder about what other users are trying to do. Certainly before you stick "unfriendly" warning templates on other peoples user pages. And definitely before you nominate valid and useful pages and templates for deletion.

If I can help you learn more about the differences between "good changes" and "bad changes", or "good articles" and "bad articles", please let me know. Guliolopez (talk) 18:32, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

An unexpected gift but thanks none the less. Very much appreciated.--Looper5920 (talk) 19:34, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits

[edit]

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 20:39, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Questions

[edit]

I hope that the guide helped. In response to your questions: I think it would be best if you stay away from things like vandal fighting and deletion until you gain a bit of expierence. I will be there to guide you along the way. Deletion is a difficult process, I suggest you familiarize yourself with the common reasons for deletion. Just placing the deletion template on the top wouldn't delete it. I know, WP has tons of rules and is quite daunting. As for the Barnstar question: Barnstars are ways of rewarding users who have put significant effort into things and had good results. To get a userpage like mine, I suggest you learn a bit of formatting or ask someone to design one for you. User:Phaedriel offers Userpage design as well as User:Dfrg.msc I believe. I hope this helps and reduces the confusion. Good luck! Marlith T/C 22:45, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Many thanks for the Barnstar - most unexpected. -TonyW (talk) 17:34, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wecoming

[edit]

If you use Firefox, I think you might want to check out WP:FRIENDLY to welcome new users easily. To help out with vandal hunting and deletion, I suggest you get WP:TWINKLE and WP:POP. I use all three and they are excellent JavaScripts. I hope they help. Marlith T/C 18:23, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, I was about to tell you the same thing, but Marlith beat me to it. Friendly is actually a tool that I wrote, and if you have any questions about any of those tools, just leave me a message and I'll help you get them set up and going! Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
It might seem tacky, since you just gave me one, but you certainly deserve this barnstar more than I do. To one of the most welcoming Wikipedians I know of, may we all follow your example. Cheers! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 18:32, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

towns

[edit]

All towns and villages, however small, have always been considered notable in WP. You have the right to challenge it in AfD if you like, but I advise you not to bother, as they have always been upheld. It may not seem to make sense, but it serves to keep us from having to debate for each one just how big it would have to be. DGG (talk) 20:04, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Afd for article : Nitronic Fission

[edit]

Hmm, we must have been writing the afds' at the same time. How do we fix that? ARendedWinter 20:21, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted the 2nd nom and the MfD of the first nom. Please use the now-single AfD page for further discussion. Thanks. —Kurykh 20:27, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Vandalism" reversion

[edit]

I think you may have hit the wrong Twinkle button, here: [1] While the edit wasn't correct formatting, neither was it vandalism. It's a mistake that can happen with the automated vandal-fighting, but I would suggest you remove the warning you left the user and perhaps explain this to them. Thanks. - Kathryn NicDhàna 21:54, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mr.Whiskers. As Kathryn has noted, you are continuing to revert edits and add vandal warnings, where edits are often generally acceptable "good faith" changes. Per my note the other day, you really should spend a little bit more time learning about the project, getting involved in creating new articles or adding value to articles yourself, before you get bogged down in vandal patrol and AfD issues. These are some of the most difficult and problematic areas of the project, and a "newbie" like yourself should probably build up to activities in those areas. Otherwise you're going to get yourself (or worse still - someone else) in trouble unnecesarily. I understand that you're probably off school during the holidays, and may be at a loss for something to do, but tracking the Special:Recentchanges page (when you don't really know what to look for) might not be the best way to go. Consider writing an article on something you are interested in, or add detail on the article about your hometown or something instead. All the best. Guliolopez (talk) 13:31, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sanfedismo

[edit]

Please be a little more conservative when tagging newly created articles for speedy deletion in the future. The following things should have prevented you from tagging the article: the use of wiki-links, foreign language links, and categories. All of these indicate context. It's no matter as I have already expanded the article, but a less experienced user than I might have been insulted or confused by the tagging, causing them not to contribute that article or even to leave the project all together. This is just a heads up; thank you for your work as a recent changes patroller. Savidan 16:49, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New deal for page patrollers

[edit]

Hi Mr.whiskers,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Further, there are more than 20 proposals related to Watchlists in general that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.
