Hello Maproom,

Regarding the subject about Mobidea page, this isn't an advert for an MLM scam. There are trustable sources in this page. How can I solve this situation?

Andrew Paterson (photographer)

[edit]

Hi Maproom,

Thanks for altering the three link references last month on the Andrew Paterson page.

The link led to the digital magazine about Paterson, which was discovered to have suffered some corruption issues during uploading.

These have now been fixed and the new link for reference numbers 8 - 15 - 22 is:

http://content.yudu.com/Library/A3ycmb/PatersonsInvernessPo/resources/

In your previous message you did say it was quicker to do these alts yourself than explain them. I hope this is still the case.Adrian (talk) 15:57, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Happy new year.

Herveus1

And a happy new year to you.
I am unsure whether you are asking me to change the links again, to the URL you supply above. I will gladly do so if this is what you want. Maproom (talk) 17:09, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi Maproom. Yes please, can you update the links again. (If you look at page 49 for example on the digital magazine the top right photo was corrupted during the upload to the site.) The document has since been fixed, (and an error in fact corrected), and re-uploaded. Each time it's uploaded though it generates a new URL. It would be much appreciated if you could add the new URL above to refs 8, 15 and 22. Adrian (talk) 17:45, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Done. I have made the three references into a single named reference, with page numbers given each time it is used. This will make any subsequent updates easier to do. It has changed the numbering from 15 onwards. Maproom (talk) 18:42, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Cheers for that Maproom.

Burchart test page

[edit]

Hi. If you want to create test pages, the best place to do that is in your user space rather than in WP:article space. Thanks. —Largo Plazo (talk) 21:52, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Indeed. And that is what I did, as you may be able to deduce from my contibutions list; though my actual test page is no longer shown there since I blanked it. I originally made a null edit to Burchart in the hope of fixing a formatting error; and apparently succeeded. I then "tidied up" what I had done by removing the null edit, perhaps this was a mistake. I concluded from my subsequent tests that there had never been anything wrong with the article; presumably I had had a defective version of it in my browser cache. Maproom (talk) 08:46, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
Eh? I deduced what you did by your creation of a page in article space called Burchart test page, which I submitted for deletion. One version of your main user page had a link to it, which you removed with your next edit after that. —Largo Plazo (talk) 12:01, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
Oh ****, so I did. That really was a blunder. My apologies. Thank you for deleting it. I'll take care not to do that again. Maproom (talk) 12:05, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

That industry is big enough that it can hire really competent shills, so there's little chance of resisting them. Maproom (talk) 08:56, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Weierstrass Institute Page

[edit]

Thank you very much for your comment at the Help Desk Talk page and your activitiy at the Weierstrass Institute's Web page.

Finding good external links as references is not THAT easy as the institute is, although well acknowledged within the scientific community, as a mathematical research institute not of such a broad public popularity and thus there are not SOO many sources reporting on it. But I have included some further, external references that should be suitable.

Would prefer to remain the title with the full name. Although Weierstrass Institute is also feasible, the long one is more common and this way the page coincides with the German one.Tostada (talk) 15:19, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Really? If a friend says "I've been offered a job at the Weierstrass Institute", I will congratulate them. If they say "I've been offered a job at the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics", I will wonder why they're talking so much.
And, I've just noticed the header you used for this section. Maproom (talk) 15:28, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Well, I personally agree, but my boss does not...

Is it to bold to ask you to have a view at the new references and send me a short notice in case it is still not sufficient to get the mentioned box removed?

Thank you very much! Tostada (talk) 17:05, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

I have looked at the references. Here are my comments.
1 is marginally acceptable.
2 is a listing, rather than a "significant discussion".
3 is a mere mention.
4,5,9 are not independent sources.
6,8 are in German, which I cannot read (they may be acceptable as establishing notability, I just can't tell).
7 does not mention the Weierstrass Institute.
I have moved the article to Weierstrass Institute, leaving a redirect at Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (though I doubt anyone will ever type in that full name). If your boss complains, point out that the article United Kingdom has that short name, rather than "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", in accordance with Wikipedia policy as stated at WP:CONCISE.

Greetings! At the Community Portal, under the heading "Help out", there are lists of article which need improving in various ways. Maproom (talk) 07:48, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

User MapRoom;

Mirrezd (talk) 21:18, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

(Comment moved to bottom of talk page.)
Mirrezd: I know nothing about Mir Abdolreza Daryabeigi, beyond what I have read in the draft. I have tried to learn more about him, by reading the sources cited in the draft, but they say little about him – many do not even mention him.
Wikipedia articles should not be written based on the writers' personal knowledge of the subject; they should be based on what has been written in reliable published sources. "International knowledge" is not necessary.
I did not "reject" the draft. I made a comment on it, hoping this would help you to improve the article. I still don't know whether the "Mir" is part of his name, or an honorific. Why don't you tell me?
The draft, as it is now, is unacceptable as an article. As all three reviewers have explained, it has no citations of reliable independent published sources that establish Daryabeigi as notable. I think he is notable, but I know nothing about the relevant literature, I cannot read Farsi, and I have been unable to find any good citations to confirm that he is notable. Maproom (talk) 08:07, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
The sources are meant to emphasize the achievement's that Mr.Daryabeigi accomplished, not to place emphasis on the artists life story. Mir is a Persian honorific. The book you mention that is written in Farsi was also published in English.
There are several legitimate sources that note Mr.Daryabeigi including the Grand Palais, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, and Iranica Encyclopedia, benezit but how do you consider these sources not noteable.Mirrezd (talk) 16:16, 12 June 2016 (UTC)Mirrezd (talk) 17:46, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
Mirrezd: I did not say that a source is "not notable". Within Wikipedia, the word "notable" should not even be applied to sources, only to the subjects of articles and potential articles. Sources are used to support the statements made in articles, and to establish that their subjects are notable. The three reviews of the draft have all said "This submission's references do not adequately show the subject's notability." I have to agree with the reviewers. Only two sources are cited within the article. The first source does not mention Daryabeigi. The second source does mention him, but does not include "significant discussion" of him, which would be needed to establish that he is notable. (Incidentally, the second source gives his birth date as 1930, different from the 1931 stated in the draft.)
My personal opinion is that Daryabeigi should have a Wikipedia article. But you need to convince a reviewer of this (I am not a reviewer). If a reviewer looks at the draft as it is now, he will see only two references cited within the article, and find that neither of them provides evidence that Daryabeigi is notable. Maproom (talk) 21:15, 12 June 2016 (UTC)

Could you please explain what are you referring as notable?

Being notable means, there is significant discussion of him in reliable independent published sources.
Being in benezit encyclopedia or irancia encyclopedia, Mr. Daryabeigi won Honorable mention from grand palais. Not notable.
There is part that I included reference number from grand palais when he won the prize from grand palais. They are not online but if you write to grand palais and ask them about Mr. Daryabeig'si honorable mention in 1982 and 1989. Grand palais will give the information that you ask for.

May be I will give up (I hope that make you happy) to try to resubmit Draft for Mr. Daryabeigi, because everybody forgot about aspect of art. Reviewers are only concern about technicality (narrator for Mr. Darybeigi's life).

Mr. Daryabeigi's name is already in 2 encyclopedia.
But Mr. Daryabeigi was a great artist and innovator of modern art in Iran. May be you do not conceder Mr. Darybeigi as an artist because of the country he was born. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mirrezd (talkcontribs) 05:52, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
I believe that Daryabeigi is notable. Your draft was rejected, three times, because it does not include adequate evidence that he is notable, in the form of several in-line references to reliable published independent sources with significant discussion of him. It has only two in-line references. Neither of them discusses him, the first does not mention him and the second only mentions him. You will not change this by telling me, or the reviewers, about his achievements and where they are discussed.
I am telling you this because I believe Daryabeigi deserves to have an article about him here, and I want you to understand what changes are needed to get the draft accepted. If you are not willing to make the necessary changes, I may try to make them myself. But I have no knowledge of art. Maproom (talk) 07:32, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

I am rely disappointed that only discussion matter not achievement. On the other hand in the book Iranian Modern Art Movement (published by contemporary of modern art) there is a short biography of Mr. Daryabeigi. (it is not online) I have a copy of that page but it is in Farsi.Mirrezd (talk) 12:54, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

In Iranian revolution in 1979 Mr. Daryabeigi lost a lot of document that was written about him.Mirrezd (talk) 12:58, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
When I have more time, I will try to improve the draft, so that it can become an article. Just a comment, made as an individual, not as as editor of Wikipedia: you wrote "May be you do not conceder Mr. Darybeigi as an artist because of the country he was born." This is unfair. I, and many English speakers, have great respect for the civilisation and culture of your country. We have much less respect for its current rulers.) Maproom (talk) 13:57, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
User Maproom, thank you for considering writing about Mr. Mir Abdolreza Daryabeigi. I have a new reference it is book called Contemporary Iranian Art. The author is Hamid Keshmirshekan. The link is https://www.bookdepository.com/Contemporary-Iranian-Art-Hamid-hmirshekan/9780863567216. When you want to write the article about Mir Abdolrez Daryabeigi if you need more information about artist please ask me (mirrezd). I have few more information that I did not mentioned in the Draft:Mir Abdolrez Daryabeigi.Mirrezd (talk) 18:09, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

For All Editors, There is a biography of Mr. Mir abdolreza Daryabeigi in book 'Iranian Modern Art Movement' published by Tehran Museum of Contemporary of Art but nobody wants to check the book.Mirrezd (talk) 02:20, 16 June 2016 (UTC)mirrezd Maproom, Thank you for modifying Mr. Daryabeig's Wikipedia darft. There are few concerns

1) the book IRANIAN MODERN ART MOVEMENT exist here is the link: http://www.pubmatch.com/book/305.html
2) All the internationals exhibitions they really exist. (It is not made up)
Unfortunately anything does not show in internet, Maproom or any other editor consider that exist.

There are few documents regarding international exhibition. Most of UNSECO document were destroyed in 1979 Iranian revolution.

All the documents about exhibitions in 'Iranian American socity' were destroyed during the revolution.Mirrezd (talk) 17:47, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
Mirrezd: I am working, slowly, on the draft. I am starting by assembling all the useful references I can, with the statements that they confirm. The draft will be accepted (or rejected) as an article on the basis of the references cited from within the article to confirm statements.
I acknowledge that the book "IRANIAN MODERN ART MOVEMENT" exists, but it is of little use to me as I cannot access it and so cannot cite it. I also acknowledge that the list of international exhibitions of Daryabeigi's work is correct. But such lists are not encouraged in Wikipedia articles, even if referenced, and will not persuade a reviewer to accept the article. Maproom (talk) 18:26, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Here is a problem. Benezit says he was born in 1930. Marsha Daryabeigi, writing at askart.com, says he was born in 1931. Wikipedia's rules say that I can cite Benezit, but should not cite the askart article is it was written by his daughter, who is not independent. Of course I prefer to believe his daughter, but Wikipedia's rules say I must prefer the independent source. Can you find an "independent" source that says 1930? It can be in Farsi. Maproom (talk) 19:22, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

When benezit was edited mirrezd was not in charge. Probably it is clerical mistake.
The discrepancy is due to the conversion of Iranian to western calendar. In order to keep the article and sources unanimous. The birthday will be 1930 in the article.Mirrezd (talk) 07:21, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
I hope it will be 1930 in the article. But the rules of Wikipedia say we must follow "reliable independent sources". At present, we have such a source for 1931, and no such source for 1930. Maproom (talk) 08:11, 19 June 2016 (UTC)

In Benezit the birthday is 1930.Mirrezd (talk) 15:40, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

I made some modification but not finished. Some feedback would be appreciatedMirrezd (talk) 06:07, 22 June 2016 (UTC)MR. Daryabeigi had another critic who follow Mr. Daryabieigi for years his name is Paul Sonnenberg I am trying to find the corresponding website for Mr.Paul Sonnenberg. Chef cruater for middle-east at grand palais.Mirrezd (talk) 06:29, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
I am finding the work difficult, so I am pleased that you are contributing to the draft. What is needed is statements about Daryabeigi, with citations.
The paragraph starting "In 1975" is good. But the references are not correctly cited. I would try to rewrite the citations in the recommended way, but I don't understand them, I'm not even sure how many citations there are.
The paragraph with the words "Mr. Daryabeigui's international renown is undeniable" is less successful. Saying that his renown is undeniable will not convince the reviewers, we have to prove it. Does Bénézit say more about him than is visible at http://oxfordindex.oup.com/view/10.1093/benz/9780199773787.article.B00046977?rskey=5fs9Vm&result=41001 ? If it does, it would be very helpful to cite what it says, rather than just stating that he is listed there. Maproom (talk) 06:47, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Regarding Mr. DAryabeigi's 1975 activity, He is not the only one on "The group of independent artists" group. Here is the list of Artists Marcos Grigorian, Morteza Momayyez, Ḡolām-Ḥosayn Nāmi, Massoud Arabshahi, Faramarz Pilaram. If you check the Wikipedia page of Marcos Grigorian,Massoud Arabshahi, you will see the article mention their group and brief activity they had together. There is document that Iran America society (at the time in 1976 )wrote about "The group of independent artists" with the picture of all the artists participant in that group in 1976. Not available in internet. The Iran America socity closed its door after Iranian Revolution. Mirrezd (talk) 02:23, 23 June 2016 (UTC)Mirrezd (talk) 22:20, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Mirrezd: I agree that Mr. Daryabeigui deserves to have an article on Wikipedia, you do not need to convince me of that. But we need to get an article through the review process. Standards for articles have risen in the last few years. Marcos Grigorian would probably be rejected if it were submitted now, as inadequately referenced. Massoud Arabshahi would certainly be rejected, as having no references.
You have added some useful content to the draft, followed by "Daftari and Diba, pp. 69-71,. Fouladvand, 2012b; “Bāzsāsi,” pp. 6-7; Pākbāz 2006, p. 451).". I assume that these are three references, but they will not be accepted by reviewers as they are not in the correct format. I can do the formatting, once I understand what they mean, but you will need to tell me, for each one:
  • is it a book or a journal?
  • name of author
  • name of work
  • if work is a journal, then also name of article
  • date of publication
  • (you have already supplied page numbers)
If this involves use of Farsi, that is acceptable: I can copy it into the reference templates, even if I can't recognise any of the letters: ـب ـﺒب
It will also help if you tell me, for each reference, which of the statements in the article it supports. Maproom (talk) 14:35, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
I have to do some research for "Daftari and Diba, pp. 69-71,. Fouladvand, 2012b; “Bāzsāsi,” pp. 6-7; Pākbāz 2006, p. 451).".
The document that I mentioned earlier from Iran America society wrote about "The group of independent artists" with the picture of all the artists participant in that group in 1976. The document is different from the list above. The paper is the copy of catalogue of the exhibition In Iran America Society. There is date but not the year. I have to do more search to find out about the year. The copy is in EnglishMirrezd (talk) 23:22, 24 June 2016 (UTC)Mirrezd (talk) 23:20, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

In the Mr. Daryabeigi's Wikipedia page there are references From grand palais : Here are references; exhibition on 1989 N°1326 Title:" la Terre promise" N°1327 " Espace Noble" Section peinture à l'eau The copy of certificate mentioning Mr. Daryabeigi's name as the winner of prize from Grand Palais is also available.
In the case the copy of document is acceptable by Wikipedia there are few more documents. All the documents have
the place where the exhibition took place
The year
The prize that Mr. Daryabeigi won
The category that Mr. Daryabeigi won
Signature of president of organizationMirrezd (talk) 18:26, 4 July 2016 (UTC) In the Draft for Mr. Daryabeigi There are two books with references verified by library of congress 1) Art 77 Washington 1977[5] 2)Modern Persian painting : Exhibition November 7 through December 18, 1968 Here is the link [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mirrezd (talkcontribs) 18:56, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

Mirrezd: what matters for Wikipedia is whether the documents have been published, so that they can be verified by readers (or at least, by readers with access to a good library and knowledge of Farsi).
I confess that I am finding it difficult to help with getting this draft accepted as an article. I can't read Farsi, and I don't have easy access to acceptable English or French sources. I have therefore left a message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts, in the hope that someone there will be able to help you. Maproom (talk) 07:50, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

How can a judge reject any claim when that judge has no knowledge of the subject?. Grand Palais is one of the most famous art center in France. The credibility of Grand Palais is the same level as a museum. Not accepting Mr. Daryabeigi article because the document are not easy to access it is just an excuse. None of documents about Mr. Daryabeigi is in Farsi. All the documents are either in French or in English. The barrier of language can be lifted. Google has an app that can translate French to English.
I am really disappointed, articles about lettuce are accepted because everybody know about it. But talent of Mr. Daryabeigi is not acceptable because it does not have drive through information.Mirrezd (talk) 02:52, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Do not try to be the judge of article that you do not have any knowledge. Mirrezd (talk) 03:20, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Mirrezd: Wikipedia is not based on the knowledge of its contributors. It is based on what is said in the reliable published sources cited in the articles. If the draft on Daryabeigi is approved as an article, it will be approved by an editor who may know nothing about art, on the basis of the works which it cites. It is the same with the article about lettuce, which cites 54 works. Maproom (talk) 11:12, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

As I understand Wikipedia is based on popularity. Do you think any article that is based on popularity is reliable?Mirrezd (talk) 15:31, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not based on popularity.
It is based on what is said in reliable independent published sources. Maproom (talk) 16:02, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

I already included three books the Mr. Daryabeigi's name was mentioned.
1) book from Tehran museum of art You use excuses that you can not read Farsi and you are not ready the read the book in English.
2) The French publication (Do not know anything about it) (not in art world)
3) Benezit (the article is too short)
Iranica Encyclopedia: You did not like how the references are presented.
The book from Columbia university in U.S.A you simply erased it.
Despite all the published references you are still asking a published references.
The inconvenience of being a judge for article which the editor do not know the subject is that the person is not familiar with sources and how important the sources are.

You wrote "Daftari and Diba, pp. 69-71,. Fouladvand, 2012b; “Bāzsāsi,” pp. 6-7; Pākbāz 2006, p. 451)." Is that the three references you mean? What are the titles of the works? Which statement in the article does each support? Maproom (talk) 18:36, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

I wrote to Iranica Encyclopedia Here is the answer:

Please find below the information you requested:
1) Rueen Pākbāz, Naqqaši moʿāṣer-e Iran, Tehran, 1974, p. 33.
No information is missing. It is a book and the book titles are always italicized
2) “Gonj o gostareh” (Volume and environment,” Iran-America Society, Tehran
3) “Gonj o gostareh-2” (Volume and environment II), Sāmān Gallery, Tehran.

As indicated in the article they are group exhibitions and not books, and were held in 1975 and 1976, respectively
4) Catalogue of the Fourth Tehran Painting Biennial, Tehran, 1964. As indicated in the article it is not a book but a catalogue, and is published in 1964
: If you have any comment about Iranica's presentation you can write to IranicaMirrezd (talk) 02:48, 11 July 2016 (UTC) I would like to know if there is any possibility to submit Mr. Dar noyabeig's article in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts. The reason I am asking is talk has the approval for Mr. Daryabeigi on the ground that Mr. Daryabeigi's name is in Benezit. Editors can verify on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts page.Mirrezd (talk) 18:22, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

I have already written there to ask for help with it, but I have seen no response. If you also ask there, and mention Benezit, I hope someone will agree to help. Maproom (talk) 20:50, 11 July 2016 (UTC)Did you check as of July 11? Johnbod said "benezit should be enough" I assume Mr. Johnbod mean benezit is a valid reference for article about Mr.Daryabeigi.Mirrezd (talk) 00:19, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for telling me about that – since July 8th, I have been abroad on holiday, with limited internet access, and only a laptop computer to use, and had not noticed. You must be right about what he means. When I am back at home, after July 16th, I shall try to get the draft ready for submission, unless you have done it already. Maproom (talk) 05:44, 12 July 2016 (UTC)I will wait until july 16th (I hope nobody remove the talk from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts until July 16th 2016. I will remove a lot from Mr. Daryabeigi's Wikipedia page.
I will only mention benezit, another publication from Nogent sur Marne. Because the magazine has the latest style of Mr. Darybeigi's painting.
Bon voyage.
Are you back yet? today is July 18 2016. Are you still interested in helping Mirrezd to update the biography of Mr. M.A.R. Daryabeigi?Mirrezd (talk) 21:22, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
I have done a little copy-editing since I got back. But I don't know what else I can do. Maybe I should delete, or comment off, the sections "Potential referenced material", "Footnote", and "Notes". And improve the formatting of "External links". Maproom (talk) 06:59, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Do you think I should submitted as is? I though about "comment off, the sections "Potential referenced material", "Footnote", and "Notes". And improve the formatting of "External links""Thank you for all the helpMirrezd (talk) 16:37, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

I will have a look at it tomorrow morning, and maybe make some more changes. I think it may be accepted this time. 22:11, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
I have done nothing yet because my internet connection has been down. Now that it is mended and I can connect to Wikipedia, I shall edit the draft to help get it ready for submission. |Maproom (talk) 10:59, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
I've cleaned up the later sections, commenting off material which should not be visible in an article. Maybe it should be deleted rather than commented off. I will leave it to you to use the "Resubmit" button, and I hope for success. Maproom (talk) 11:10, 20 July 2016 (UTC)I resubmitted I hope it will be accepted this time. Thank you very much for all the help and I wish you good luck.Mirrezd (talk) 16:34, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

Mr. Daryabeigi's article has been accepted by Wikipedia. Thank you for all your help.Mirrezd (talk) 16:15, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I was very pleased to see that. Thank you for your contributions. Maproom (talk) 19:22, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi maproom. I have a question the article for Mr. Daryabeigi I receive the notice the article is orphan. What does that mean. Other question how I make that is not orphan. Mirrezd (talk) 02:31, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi Mirrezd. The "orphan" tag means that there is no other article in English Wikipedia which links to it. There is no need to correct this; but if you want to remove the tag, you can find some other article and add there a link to Mir Abdolrez Daryabeigi. Maproom (talk) 07:55, 12 November 2016 (UTC)
Thank you maproom. There was Asian Month (Well half month has passed) Do you think if I link Mr. Dayabeigi's article to Asian month is is better?Mirrezd (talk) 23:38, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
Mirrezd: I don't know about Asian Month, but I think it's not an article, and so a link there would not change the "orphan" status. But I have added links at Marcos Grigorian and List of Iranian painters, and removed the "orphan" tag. Hello, Maproom, you were so kind to mention that you would have a look on my translated page (i did write also the german article) - here is the link. Please, if you find mistakes, i would prefer to learn how to solve it myself instead of you doing the work:-), i am really trying to learn!!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gyanda/Heiner_Thiel - Thanks in advance!!! --Gyanda (talk) 18:30, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

Gyanda: I have done some copy-editing on the draft. I see that the actual contents (excluding the lists of collections and exhibitions) contains no references at all. I doubt that it will be accepted as an article, until someone can add some. Maproom (talk) 18:48, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your work. As i wrote already, up to now i thought that the german wikipedia was working extremely painstakingly, as they do have a strict relevance-policy, especially with living artists, but i did not know that you really would doubt 4 different sources of the biography of an artist, which all state the same. I am feeling a bit puzzled now, i must confess. Heiner Thiel is a really well-known artist, worldwide, he exhibits in countries as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, USA - i am really puzzled by the fact that although i named all this (and did give links at the exhibitions and collections) the artist should not be relevant. I added some information on the draft, perhaps you can take a look. Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 19:23, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
I have not said that the Thiel is not notable. But I have seen many articles reviewed, and I know that most reviewers require references cited to confirm statements made within the text of the article. Maproom (talk) 21:32, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Overlaid images

[edit]

See St Mary Cray railway station and Swanley railway station - the former uses the default map of {{infobox London station}}, the latter has the same infobox but with |map_type=Kent. The infobox uses {{location map}} and thus Module:Location map, which superimposes File:Red pog.svg on the map. This module gets its data from Template:Location map United Kingdom Greater London or Template:Location map United Kingdom Kent respectively, according to the |map_type= parameter. These templates - which are not used as templates but as data files - have information on the map images (File:Greater London UK location map 2.svg and File:Kent UK location map.svg respectively) and the coordinates of their corners. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:19, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Next steps to revise existing article

[edit]

Hello, Maproom. In September you addressed my question in the Teahouseregarding the best process to update an existing article, Committee on Sustainability Assessment. Thank you.

I believe I correctly followed your suggestion, which was to include the proposed revisions on the article's Talk page. It's been a few weeks, and I've not seen any feedback from other editors. Is this normal? Is there another step I should take or correction to make? I have a conflict of interest in that I volunteered to COSA to revise this page for them, so I want to be sure that it is reviewed by a neutral editor.

Many thanks in advance for any additional insights. K.Emanuele (talk) 19:22, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

Hello K.Emanuele. I see you have placed a complete rewrite of the article on the talk page. This is I think acceptable, but is not what I intended to recommend. It would I think be better if the rewrite were somewhere else, probably as a subpage of your user page.
It is, unfortunately, quite common for no-one to respond on a talk page, particularly where there are likely to be few editors watching the article.
I do not feel able to comment on the content of your rewrite, as the subject is one I have no knowledge of or interest in. But I have some comments on the format:
  • It has no lead section.
  • The section headers are wrongly formatted. They should look like the header of this talk-page section, and not be in upper case.
  • The web page citations have "url" and "title" fields only; they would be better with "First name", "Last name", and "Website name" as well, where possible.
  • You use curly quotes “”. Recommended are straight quotes "".
  • You include direct external links, e.g. Centro de Estudios Regionales Cafeteros y Empresariales. These should be avoided.
  • You should avoid citing COSA's own web site: it is not an independent source.
I hope this helps, and will gladly answer further questions (though not about the content) here. Maproom (talk) 22:00, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

Thank you, Maproom. This is helpful. I appreciate the format-related comments and will revise as you recommend. Once the formatting revisions are made, do you recommend moving it to a subpage of my user page or leaving where it is and perhaps looking for an content-related editor in the Teahouse? Would it be appropriate to post a message on the user pages of any of the editors listed on the article history page? Thank you. K.Emanuele (talk) 19:00, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia is based on what is written in reliable independent published sources, not on the wishes and opinions of the relatives of subjects. (And in my view, what happened when he was 15 reflects badly on the agent, not on Leon or his parents.) Maproom (talk) 17:08, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Formal Precommitment Mechanism

[edit]

Hey dude, you should really read the study more carefully, Dr Shubik talks about formal precommitment mechanism on his study, it was required for the game to function.

Please read study more carefully.

"These include the formal definition of what happens when you have 0 or 1 persons..the formal (and commonsensical) answer is that nothing happens."— Dr. Martin Shubik

MikoFilppula (talk) 16:41, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

I read and understood the rest of the article before I deleted your contribution. I also read your contribution, and found that it appears to be on a different topic. Its final sentence included "Bids were sold". There is nothing in the article, nor in the paper it cites by Shubik, about bids being sold. In the form of auction described in the article and in the paper, anyone present may freely make a bid. Maproom (talk) 17:22, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

--MikoFilppula (talk) 17:57, 31 October 2016 (UTC) If there is no formal mechanism for precommitment the game doesn't work. If the bids are not sold in advance then the auction keeper has to chase down the losing bidders to get paid. In Finland this would be possible since the Finnish collection systems/billing system is great. However in the United States if poeple can bid without paying for their bids in advance, all the losing bidders would just flee and auction operator would have the burden to collect from these bidders. Auction operator would become a collection agency instead.

I am now further convinced that you are writing about some other kind of auction than the one that Dollar auction is about. In a dollar auction, all the bidders are in the room, there is no question of "chasing them down"; and bids are not "sold". Maybe you're thinking of Bidding fee auction? Want to help shape the future of the Wikipedia editing experience?

[edit]

Hi Maproom!

Thanks for responding to Whatamidoing's request for editors. The Design Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation is currently seeking Wikipedians for user studies about their experience with current editing tools and to test out some prototype editing tools. If you’re interested in helping to shape the future of editing on Wikipedia, we would love to have you participate! The study session will take approximately 30 minutes, maximum of 45 minutes.

The study will take place in the next couple weeks, and will require participants to have access to a webcam and microphone (or a laptop with built in cam & mic), with a quiet place to go for a research session. Please email dchen[at]wikimedia.org and include the following information:

  • Username Maproom
  • Email where we can reach you
  • Your city or time zone
  • Best time to talk to you

Please let me know if you have any questions! Look forward to hearing from you.

Moving Draft

[edit]

Hello.I wrote a draft called Candy Ken and than i made a " bold move" and moved it to the main name space.Did i made a mistake? I really made big effort writing it.will it be reviewed?can you help me and advice me? Thank you very much

Zoran3003 (talk) 00:32, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
Hello Zoran3003. By moving your draft into mainspace, you have bypassed the review process, so it will not now be reviewed. However there is a danger that it will be deleted, probably for lacking evidence of notability. I have no interest in popular culture, and cannot judge the quality of the references. But the ones I have looked at are all interviews with the subject, and so are not independent and do not contribute to establishing his notability.
Here are some improvements you could make to the article:
  • Remove, or fill in, the empty columns in the discography tables.
  • Correct the use of spacing around punctuation marks and references.
  • Give his date and place of birth in the first sentence of the article.
  • Correct the many spelling mistakes.
  • Remove the statements which are referenced only to interviews.

Archived discussion retrieval

[edit]

Dear @Maproom:. Might you be able to point me in the right direction as to retrieving an archived discussion? In full disclosure, I need to simply reference your comment regarding actor Danny Wells on the NPOV Noticeboard a while back. Thank you so much. Best. Maineartists (talk) 19:32, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

My apologies. I seem to have found the archived discussion. However, I must have been mistaken that you left a comment in agreement with Danny Wells now being a notable character based on his updated page. It must have been someplace else. Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 19:50, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Dear Maineartists: I was certainly involved in some such discussion. I recall your username, and I recall mention of Danny Wells. I think I used the existence of the article about him to support the case for some other person being notable. (I am usually on the not side in notability discussions, so that exception has stayed in my mind.) Maproom (talk) 23:28, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Dear Maproom thank you for your reply. I appreciate it. I am currently in discussion with another editor. It has been quite some time. During the interim, I have been diligently "doing my homework". Upon your advice on The Jeffersons talk page, I updated the Danny Wells actor page. (There were only 2 editors in discussion: you and another) The other editor has had absolutely no contact since the discussion. I was 100% certain that once I had finished the update, you had viewed the actor's page and agreed he was notable for inclusion. I wouldn't have asked any other editor to review it. However, I didn't stop there: I took the discussion to a Noticeboard and invited the other editor (who did not partake) and stated the case with several reliable sources. As you can see on the talk page [2], even with all the work done, it was reverted. I'm at a loss. Thanks just the same for your time and attention. Best, Maineartists (talk) 23:39, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

Deletions to the page International Playing Card Society

[edit]

I have no idea why you would edit the topic "Benefir of membership" . This is a not for profit research society which either makes a small plus or minus on it's income stream depending on the amount we are paid my the Publishing Rights organisation. As to "conflight of interest" - I am the deputy chairman and my sole interest is in promoting this society for further research and acedemic work and to broaden the audience for the scholarly contributions. In my position it is obvious that my contribution has to be factual. Can you please reverse the edit. Thanks. John CardAndGameMan (talk) 18:07, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

I understand your reason for promoting the IPCS. However Wikipedia's policy is to forbid its use for promotion, see WP:PROMOTION. Also, as a person connected with the IPCS, you are strongly discouraged from editing the article about it at all, see WP:COI.
Incidentally, the article (which I created over five years ago), has no references to establish that the IPCS is notable. This was acceptable then, but not now. It is therefore in some danger of being deleted. If you are able to tell me of references to the IPCS in reliable independent published sources, I will add them to the article; this may help it to survive as an article. Maproom (talk) 19:03, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Hallo!thank you for editing the draft Draft:Lal Sena

[edit]

I am a new editor. Please comment about the draft I created. What do you think about it? Is it going good? Maaley (talk) 15:24, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

I think your draft is good, and will probably be accepted as an article if you submit it.
I know nothing about the subject except what I have learned from your draft. But I have a few comments:
  • The current series of section headers, "1 Origins 1.1 Issues that led to the armed conflict 2 History 2.1 The conflict and violence 3 Present" is a bit confusing. Can you make them into a single series, numbered 1 2 3 4 5, instead of using subsections?
  • I don't think "Present" is a good name for a section. I hope people will still be reading this in 50 years' time. It would be better to write "After 2005", or whenever you think the militia became inactive.
  • You have a some table entries "Upper caste landlords". Were those men all rich Bhumihars? Or were some of them men hired by the landowners? You could just omit the words "Upper caste landlords" and "Caders".
Maproom (talk) 16:46, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. I am immediately making changes in the necessary section headers. According to the references, the characteristics of the militias were predominantly caste based. All these militias are from upper castes. Among these militias the major upper caste militia is Ranvir Sena which is made up of people from Bhumihar caste. Other smaller militias are from different minor upper castes as mentioned in the conflict infobox like Kuer Sena, Lorik Sena, etc. These uppercaste militias are comprised of upper class and middle class peasantry as mentioned in the conflict infobox. They are both funded and actively participated by landlords (mainly upper class peasantry) and landowner(Middle Class Peasantry). On the other hand the lower cast (and also lower class) peasantry and agricultural labourers allied themselves with the CPIML factions as mentioned in conflict infobox. One of those militias which was composed of lower caste(and also lower class)peasantry is the Lal Sena which was in allegiance to CPI(ML)Liberation(one of the CPI(ML)factions). The whole conflict is based on both social inequality(caste system,i.e. upper caste vs the lower caste) and economic inequality( like inequal distribution of land),i.e, upper class/upper middle class peasantry(Landlords/landowners who primarily belonged to upper castes) vs lower middle class/lower class peasantry and landless sharecroppers/labourers who primary belonged to lower castes and had minute share of agricultural lands or no land, some of the lower caste sharecroppers worked in the fields of the uppercaste landlords deprived of their fundamental rights to which there immediate social(lowercaste) and economic identity (poor economic condition) were exploited. Maaley (talk) 17:31, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Yes I have already omitted some of these "upper caste landlords" and "cadres" templates. I will surly further edit them to keep a more neutral point of view. Maaley (talk) 17:35, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Lancastrian Brigade Junior Bandsmen

[edit]

Hello Maproom,

I am hoping I'm in the correct place to communicate with you on a one-to-one basis. If I recall you needed to know the title of the article it is; Junior Bandsmen Wing Fulwood Barracks 1961-1963.

I would be very grateful if you could encourage me to proceed correctly in publishing this article. If not forward this email onto someone who can please. You have probably realised I am not a Wikipedia editor or a writer of articles. I am just someone off the street who has a true story to tell, who has submitted a genuine article and photos with supported authorisation.

Do I need to resubmit this article and the authorisations again ? if so how please.

Yours faithfully Charles Dobson CD0060576 (talk) 21:09, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello CD0060576. Yes, this is a good place for one-to-one communication.
I did not need to know the title of the article. User:Dodger67 asked, near the top of the draft, "What is the actual title and subject of this draft?". You have never answered that question. Is it intended to be about a building, an institution, a group of people, or something else? The subject of an article should be indicated by its title and evident from its first sentence; neither is the case here. And why is "1961-1963" appended to the title?
Wikipedia does not exist to "tell stories". Rather, it has articles about notable subjects (click on that blue word to find what "notable" means here). I cannot tell what the intended subject of the draft is, but I still have doubts about whether it is notable. If its notability cannot be established, by references to reliable independent published sources that discuss the subject, then the article cannot be accepted. I see that the draft mentions a picture, and an article, in the Isle of Man Daily Times, but does not cite them in an acceptable way. Any experienced editor could correct the style of the citations, but few will have access to an archive holding that newspaper – I certainly don't.
I see that you have tried to supply a copyright release for an image you want to use. I am not an expert in this, but I doubt that the release is acceptable. You have provided it within the draft itself, but it ought to be sent to the authorities at Wikipedia Commons if that is where you want to upload the image. Also, it says "permission to reproduce the photograph on the Wikipedia page". That is insufficient for an image to be accepted by Wikipedia Commons. The owner of the copyright must also provide the right for everyone to redistribute copies, and to create and distribute derivative works, even for commercial purposes. You can learn more about this here.   Maproom (talk) 08:53, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Reply: It is an organisational group photograph The subject of an article should be indicated by its title and evident from its first sentence; neither is the case here. Reply: Can I suggest the title be changed to: Lancastrian Brigade Junior Bandsmen. And why is "1961-1963" appended to the title? Reply: This is a period this organisation existed.

Reply: The Lancastrian Brigade is a very notable organisation please sees.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancastrian_Brigade

I see that the draft mentions a picture, and an article, in the Isle of Man Daily Times, but does not cite them in an acceptable way. Any experienced editor could correct the style of the citations, but few will have access to an archive holding that newspaper – I certainly don't.

So the subject of the article is the photograph. I am sure that the photograph is not notable enough to justify a Wikipedia article. But if you want to upload the photograph to Wikimedia Commons, I think you should be able to do so, if you provide the copyright release which you have copied above. I have never myself provided a copyright release for Wikipedia Commons, but I believe it involves a moderate amount of bureaucracy. However, you may be able to bypass the bureacracy if you can persuade Mr. Kidson to create an account on Wikimedia Commons and then upload the photograph there himself. Maproom (talk) 17:07, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Maproom, I think asking Mr Kidson to create another account is disappointing to say the least. I feel rather embarrassed to do so as suggested. The issues / problems is not his fault but Wikipedia's bureaucratic machine / process (as you know). I feel the very disappointed we should be taking that route. How about Wikipedia taking responsibility for it's misgivings and try and find this article. If it would help: I could forward my email to yourself or someone else to investigate which is my preferred option or resubmit the article if it makes it easier ?. Best Regards Charles CD0060576 (talk) 21:11, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

I understand that you don't want to approach Mr. Kidson about it again. So you can submit the message from him to the authorities at Wikimedia Commons yourself. Don't ask me how to do this, I have never done it myself and I don't know how to. Or you could post the photograph to some other site, such as Facebook, where they are less bothered about respecting copyright law.
I don't understand your comment about misgivings. Wikipedia has no misgivings, or responsibility, on this issue. Resubmitting the draft would be a waste of the time of the editor who assesses it: it will certainly be rejected, as its subject is not notable. Maproom (talk) 08:34, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

You do surprise me that Wikipedia has no responsibility regarding this article

If someone tries to submit an article which is clearly not suitable for Wikipedia, then "Wikipedia", or rather the volunteers who edit it, have no responsibility to help. I have nevertheless done my best to answer your questions.

or why it can't be located.

It is still at Draft:Junior_Bandsman_Wing_Fulwood_Barracks_1961-63. I have been obliged to delete most of its contents, after reading it carefully and realising that it was a direct quotation from the Isle of Man Daily Times. Wikipedia is very fussy (much more so than most other web sites) about respecting copyright law, and direct quotations of such length are not acceptable on Wikipedia.

You sound very curt, off handed, disrespectful and not wanting to engage with the contributor. I respectfully request we calm down. You say this article isn't notable please explain why you come to this conclusion.

I did not say that the article isn't notable. I wrote "the photograph is not notable enough to justify a Wikipedia article". It's the subject (in this case a photograph), not the article, that is not notable.

My previous conversation goes like the with Stephen Philbrick:

[Ticket#2016070710015214] Confirmation of receipt (Re: Submiting two photo [...])04/10/2016 19:17

Dear Charles Dobson,

Unfortunately, we are extremely backlogged.

In addition, the original permission did not have a link to the image although there was an attachment. As part of our process, we attach a permission tag to the image but we have to find it. I searched for: File:Junior Bandsman Wing Fulwood Barracks 1961.jpg

But did not find it, not even in our deleted files.

Yours sincerely, Stephen Philbrick

I would be very grateful if you could advise how we could proceed. If this article needs to be in the hands of others to tweak by a professionals could take ownership, any suggestions please. This article / subject needs to be on the Wikipedia's Fulwood Barracks web pages..... Please help me if you can. Best Regards Charles CD0060576 (talk) 16:42, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

No amount of tweaking, or even professional rewriting, could make Draft:Junior Bandsman Wing Fulwood Barracks 1961-63 into an acceptable article. However you may be able to add some information to Wikipedia's article Fulwood Barracks.
As for providing an acceptable copyright release for the photograph – that is something I have never done and don't know how to do. But if it's Wikipedia Commons where you want to upload it, you would probably do best to ask for help there, rather than here on English-language WIkipedia. Maproom (talk) 20:35, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello Maproom - I'm still struggling I would like to submit a new document, unfortunately I am unable to edit the original article Junior_Bandsman_Wing_Fulwood_Barracks_1961-63 as it has been removed or deleted. The new article will be titled "Lancastrian Brigade Junior Bandsmen (Period 1961-1963)" The photograph you refer to has been uploaded please speak to Stephen Philbrick. If there's anything you can do or recommend the process as to how to retrieve this document to edit I would be most grateful. Yours Faithfully Charles DobsonCD0060576 (talk) 16:01, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

As I told you above, the draft is still at Draft:Junior_Bandsman_Wing_Fulwood_Barracks_1961-63. It has not been deleted. I doubt you will get an article accepted with the title "Lancastrian Brigade Junior Bandsmen (Period 1961-1963)": as well as being too long for an article title, it does not refer to a notable subject. I don't know why you want me to speak to Stephen Philbrick, and anyway I don't have contact details for him. Maproom (talk) 17:11, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

January 2017 European cold wave

[edit]

Re this edit - as shown here, the polar air mass is centred over Russia, and eastern Scandinavia, though I agree that the non-technical press reports do not make it exactly clear. If we can find a better meteorological explanation, I suggest we use it. Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:04, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

From the Al Jazeera source: "The reason for the frigid blast is a strong area of high pressure that has settled over western parts of the continent. The location of the high-pressure system, or anticyclone, means that the past few days have seen a cold northerly blast extend from Scandinavia to the Levant countries." This makes meteorological sense. An anticyclone, with its clockwise winds, over Western Europe would bring air from Scandinavia to the eastern Mediterranean.
The severe-weather.eu page refers to "The brutally cold airmass from Russia and Scandinavia which continues spreading across central Europe into N Balkan."
Neither is compatible with the "strong winds circulating from eastern Russia towards eastern Europe" which I removed from the article. I have no objection to the current state of the article. Maproom (talk) 10:29, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
That's fine - I was only concerned about your exclusion of Russia. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:34, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Heiner Thiel

[edit]

Dear Maproom, if i have it right, you transformed all links on the site, yes? - I wrote this <ref>{{Internetquelle |autor=Hans Zitko |titel=Zu den farbigen Wandobjekten von Heiner Thiel |Sammelwerk=Embodying Colour. Catalogue accompanying an ongoing Exhibition-Project, curated by German Artists Heiner Thiel and Michael Post |Seiten=77–80 |datum=2013}}</ref> and you made from it <ref>{{cite web|title=Zu den farbigen Wandobjekten von Heiner Thiel|trans_title=|periodical=|publisher=|url=|deadurl=|format=|accessdate=|archiveurl=|archivedate=|last=Hans Zitko|date=2013|year=|month=|day=|language=German|pages=|quote=}}</ref> - if i have it right, now noone knows anymore that this is an article from the catalogue??? And you also erased the pagenumbers - is this really helpful to find the article to erase these both information?

Is it definitively better to sign the links like you did in the english wikipedia, or should i keep the german way to make links??? Would be thankful for an answer, kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 01:31, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Gyanda, the only edit I have made to Heiner Thiel is to replace a comma by a period at the end of the first sentence. I see from the article's edit history that AnomieBot has been changing the style of the citations. Maproom (talk) 08:48, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick answer. Now i ask myself, how can a bot change something to the worse and if i would add the missing info - would the bot erase that again? Is there a means to prevent bots to make things worse??? Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 15:12, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
I haven't studied the bot's edits in detail, but I believe that its conversions of "Internetquelle" to "cite web", "autor" to "last", "datum" to "date", etc., in the English-language version of the article, were improvements. Maproom (talk) 08:25, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

I do not wish to template a regular, but a regular should know better than to make an edit like this--which contains very, very serious BLP violations, with loaded language completely unverified by the sources (first paragraph), loaded language containing OR/synthesis based on an unreliable source (second paragraph), and chatty gossip completely unverified by anything (third paragaph). Did you seriously reinstate allegations based, apparently, on some Amazon reviews? Drmies (talk) 17:20, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

  • Look quickly, because I'm about to scrub the history of this content. Drmies (talk) 17:23, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
This was over a month ago, so I don't recall what the material I restored said. I reverted an unexplained deletion of content, some of it referenced; then looked at what I had restored, and redeleted some of it as unreferenced and/or irrelevant. I accept that I should have looked at it more critically (particularly in a BLP), and before restoring any of it. Maproom (talk) 22:51, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. It basically argued that this subject, who had been a victim of sexual blackmail and exploitation, ran a scam to make money off of people's desire to give to charity. It alleged fishy business dealings, working under an alias, and false advertising. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 02:02, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

MikoFilppula (talk) 18:24, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Yes the game was called Dollar Auction game before computers and internet existed and yes it was normally conducted with a room full of poeple, at parties. Maybe back in 1971 one could trust strangers in ways where you would just trust that they will pay their losing bid without fleeing, but you were still better of having well lubricated security guys, who would not let poeple leave the premises without paying.

However, in todays world, it would be too much of collecting work to get losing bidders to pay for their bids, afterwards. It would not work. It would be like you would walk to a poker table and pay later.

"Journal Of Conflict Resolution, Volume 15, Issue 1, Page 110, “If there is no formal mechanism for precommitment, we would need to specifythe degree of belief of the other bidders in order to check upon the stability of the market robot bidders."

Please see Precommitment

Precommitment is a strategy in which a party to a conflict uses a commitment device to strengthen its position by cutting off some of its options to make its threats more credible. Any party employing a Strategy of Deterrence faces the problem that retaliating against an attack may ultimately result in significant damage to their own side. If this damage is significant enough, then the opponent may take the view that such retaliation would be irrational, and therefore, that the threat lacks credibility, and hence, it ceases to be an effective deterrent. Precommitment improves the credibility of a threat, either by imposing significant penalties on the threatening party for not following through, or, by making it impossible to not respond. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MikoFilppula (talkcontribs) 18:56, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

I think two related but different things are being discussed here. There's dollar auction, played in the 1970s for a $1 bill and now for a $10 or $20 bill, in a room full of people who already know each other, maybe at a party or a business training session, and played only once (they will learn their lesson from a single auction). And there's "penny auction" or all-pay auction, run commercially to scam money from naive customers. There's no need to secure precommitment as their money is transferred as soon as they make a bid, and there's no shortage of new fools on the internet. Maproom (talk) 14:35, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
