Evaluate an article

[edit]

This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.

  • Black Girl Magic Black Girl Magic
  • Black Girl Magic is a term I have seen grow in popularity in the last years on social media, but I wasn't sure about the origin of the term and I was interested in learning more.

Lead

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Does the Lead include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic?
  • Does the Lead include a brief description of the article's major sections?
  • Does the Lead include information that is not present in the article?
  • Is the Lead concise or is it overly detailed?

Lead evaluation

[edit]

The Lead explains that the movement originated in 2016, and that it was originated by CaShawn Thompson in 2013. It goes on to explain that the hashtag started online and has become a movement in real life and not simply online which the article goes deeper on how this happened. It does mention Michelle Obama and her speech around Black women thriving around the world inspired the hashtag, but the point is not further developed in the founding section of the article. For the most part I feel as if the Lead is concise in the sense that if I simply read the lead I would walk away with an idea of what Black Girl Magic is.

Content

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article's content relevant to the topic?
  • Is the content up-to-date?
  • Is there content that is missing or content that does not belong?

Content evaluation

[edit]

The content includes mentions of 2019 so while sparse the content contains some present day information. The founding section lacks the Michelle Obama reference about her being one of the inspirations behind the hashtag, and instead has superfluous information about Jesse Williams and his usage of the term three years after its origin. The Jesse Williams and Essence paragraphs could be moved to the popular culture section where examples of people who embody or utilize Black Girl Magic are mentioned.

Tone and Balance

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article neutral?
  • Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
  • Does the article attempt to persuade the reader in favor of one position or away from another?

Tone and balance evaluation

[edit]

I would say the article attempts to be neutral. The Music section had quotes, lyrics, and references to music created by artist to support the claim that these artists showcase Black Girl Magic, whereas the athletes section simply describes Black women in sports who succeed in their field without any quotes or further evidence to justify the claim. Black Girl Magic refers to "[celebrating] the beauty, power and resilience of Black women", and the authors is attempting to persuade the reader that any Black women succeeding in their field is basically displaying Black Girl Magic.

Sources and References

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Are all facts in the article backed up by a reliable secondary source of information?
  • Are the sources thorough - i.e. Do they reflect the available literature on the topic?
  • Are the sources current?
  • Check a few links. Do they work?

Sources and references evaluation

[edit]

The links seem to work for the most part. The sources seem to be current with most being from 2016 to the present. Not all facts are backed up by sources such as when the author claims that some believe that the concept of Black Girl Magic reinforces strong Black women stereotype through the pressure to succeed.

Organization

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article well-written - i.e. Is it concise, clear, and easy to read?
  • Does the article have any grammatical or spelling errors?
  • Is the article well-organized - i.e. broken down into sections that reflect the major points of the topic?

Organization evaluation

[edit]

Images and Media

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Does the article include images that enhance understanding of the topic?
  • Are images well-captioned?
  • Do all images adhere to Wikipedia's copyright regulations?
  • Are the images laid out in a visually appealing way?

Images and media evaluation

[edit]

The article doesn't include images of those it claims display Black Girl Magic for the audience to see.

Checking the talk page

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • What kinds of conversations, if any, are going on behind the scenes about how to represent this topic?
  • How is the article rated? Is it a part of any WikiProjects?
  • How does the way Wikipedia discusses this topic differ from the way we've talked about it in class?

Talk page evaluation

[edit]

The article is rated C Class and is under WikiProject Women, WikiProject African Diaspora, Women WikiProject Internet Culture, and Women WikiProject Gender studies.

Overall impressions

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • What is the article's overall status?
  • What are the article's strengths?
  • How can the article be improved?
  • How would you assess the article's completeness - i.e. Is the article well-developed? Is it underdeveloped or poorly developed?

Overall evaluation

[edit]

I think the article is a good skeleton of an interesting topic. It tries to be thorough in its examples of film, music, television, but some sections were more well developed than others. The article could be improved by expanding more so on how it started and how it transitioned from an internet hashtag to mainstream media. In the controversy section, I would expand on why Rachel Dolezal doesn't invoke the Black Girl Magic philosophy and expand more so on the controversy with trademarking the hashtag.
