The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. I haven't suggested otherwise. But without a title conflict, a hatnote is sufficient. It serves the same function as a dab page. Station1 (talk) 05:37, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It applies to cases where two articles would have identical titles, such as the John Quested example. Where two articles properly have different titles, there's no benefit to any reader to sticking a dab page in their way. Station1 (talk) 07:32, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The comment above does not match longstanding procedure and guidelines. Where there's no primary topic, we have a disambiguation. Whether one, both or neither of the pages is actually titled with the ambiguous name is irrelevant. If everyone's in agreement that there isn't a primary topic between the two, then the move should simply go ahead. — Amakuru (talk) 21:31, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Note - discussion opened as there appears to be controversy regarding this move request. Although the policy-based reason for moving seems solid enough, a technical request would likely have been disputed in this case. I previously moved Mexico (barque) to Mexico (barque, wrecked 1886), which has since been merged into Southport and St Anne's lifeboats disaster. I'm not touching the proposed title, but I would suggest (as above) something in the vein of Wreck of the Mexico (1837) (or any other title, I just feel that the year first is unusual for us and leads to more ambiguity)
Comment I was the nominator at RMTR -- I will note that people should read the extended discussion copied from RMTR, particularly that I assert wP:NOPRIMARY, and that there are different UK and US usage -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 22:22, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support move but prefer Wreck of the Mexico (1837) or another alternative. As raised by Asukite, the proposed title reads like the same Mexico was wrecked multiple times. A Google search for "wreck of the Mexico" turns up more results about the 1886 event. --Paul_012 (talk) 11:20, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. There is no title conflict between Wreck of the Mexico and Southport and St Anne's lifeboats disaster, and because there is no title conflict readers seeking the 1886 grounding will get there just as easily by clicking on the existing hatnote at the top of the article as they would by clicking on a link in a two-entry dab page. Meanwhile, readers seeking the 1837 wreck will not be inconvenienced by having to click through a dab page in the way of the article they want in the first place.
