The article says Richard & Cale raced to a late caution; what brought out the yellow, & what lap?

Also, I added this:

"Accessibility was his hallmark. In a sport, and a sports world, where big stars could and did refuse to sign autographs, Richard made a point of staying until everybody got one."

I just wish I could cite where I read it...

Richard was so popular, most fans had two drivers to cheer for: their guy, or Richard, if their guy fell out or had no chance. I can't think of any other driver that's true of.

BTW, the fistfight bit made a "Top 10" list of greatest racing stories in C&D or R&T, which is where I saw it... Trekphiler 16:05, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I added that Richard & Cale part because I read it in a "Greatest Sports Moments of All Time" (of that sort). I think it was on Lap 198 and a rookie driver crashed, which brought out the yellow. I'm going to have to check, though... Hbdragon88 06:38, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reassessment reasoning

[edit]

Downgraded from A to B class, for the following reasons:

  • citations (that is, none.)
  • Images (you would think that Petty was a car by the images in this article)
  • well written (While it is important that Petty won 200 races, is it important to list all 200? In any case, it is distracting in the middle of the article.)

Poles

[edit]

The article says 127 poles, the info box 123, I'm no expert, but which is it?Mbisanz 23:38, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of Citation

[edit]

I'm not a Petty fan, so I do not claim to know everything about the guy, but where is the citation to back up the following statement: "Petty ran over a child in a race and killed him in his younger days."

I took out that sentence, because while I managed to find it in the article, the citation was messed up. The grammar was bad as well. If the citation could be fixed and it is obviously something quoted often in mainstream biographies, then it would belong in the summary at the top. Otherwise I suggest leaving it out. 76.160.173.242 16:02, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Petty's ethnicity

[edit]

i was just curious, ive been a fan of richard petty for some tyme, but i was wanting 2 ask a question, kinda random, but.. wat is petty's ethnicity? is he a Native American or something? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.194.130.155 (talk) 18:46, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Petty's championships

[edit]

Shouldn't it be said that Richard Petty won seven Winston Cup Championships rather than Sprint Cup Championships? It was not called the Sprint Series when he was racing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.84.137.190 (talk) 22:36, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

True... However, in Nascar, championships are listed by series-- if the series name changes, the championship honors change as well. This is because sponsors sometimes change series, and proper honors need to be retained. Petty won seven championships in NASCAR's top division. Therefore, he is a seven-time champion in whatever the division is currently named-- even if it is different now than it was when he was racing. I apologize if this sounds confusing, but many things in NASCAR are! Musicchristopher (talk) 16:47, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, some of them were Pre-Winston Cup championships, when it was known as the Grand National series. 66.233.166.71 (talk) 14:06, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I've killed the references to "Modern HotrodZ" in the external links. There are three or four that talk all about the show, and they only mention RP one time. It looks more like promotion for the show than anything else. Almostfm (talk) 10:04, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

First Race

[edit]

In one place, this article says that Petty's first race was in Toronto; in another place, Buffalo. Which is it? 207.219.69.153 (talk) 18:15, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cars

[edit]

I believe the fact about how the crash at the end of the Pixar movie Cars was based on his 1988 crash is dead wrong. It instead looked strikingly similar to Rusty Wallace's 1993 crash. Is there a way we could get a check on the validity of that fact? Keokithederp (talk) 05:53, 23 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Child's Age/ Number injured

[edit]

When it says that he was involved in a crash that killed a child, this article says the child was 6 and there were seven people injured, however in this page it says the child was 8 and there 8 people injured. Just wondering which it was, as there are three different newspaper sources between the two articles

Richard Petty won 37 races with a Dodge and multiple championships with Dodges. He won very few with a Pontiac. Please include Dodges in his Wiki article. Thank you 72.209.27.209 (talk) 13:08, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Charliehdb (talk) 13:11, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
