Ney and Maison: contradictions in text

[edit]

There seems to be somewhat of a contradiction between the following two sentences in the article:

  • In 1812 he joined Napoléon in the invasion of Russia. At some point in the invasion marshal Ney saved his life, a deed he would later repay by condemning Ney to death.
  • He was put on the court martial appointed to judge Marshal Ney on a charge of treason for joining Napoléon but after he and his colleagues declared themselves incompetent he was demoted to command of the 8th Military Division in Marseilles.

In fact the members of the courtmartial didn’t want to judge Ney and declared themselves incompetent for which they we’re all punished varying from arrest to demotion. But I cannot seem to find a source that had Maison sitting on that court-martial. On the contrary. As far as I can find after Moncey refused the chairmanship it was composed of Marshal Jordan (as president), Marshal Massena, Marshal Augereau, Marshal Mortier, General de Division Gazan de La Peyriere, General de Division Claparede and General de Division Vilatte. Gazan was a replacement for Maison who seemed to have refused to take part as well. Methinks the article should definitely be reworded because as it currently stands it’s contradictory. I have thus reworded the first sentence slightly to have it accord to the second one. -- fdewaele, 11 May 2021, 21:08 CET
