It is indeed a shame that the London Palladium is now owned by one such as Andrew Lloyd Webber. He is one of a number of names (others include Bill Gates, Rupert Murdoch, Richard Branson) who seem intent on taking over the world. As Algernon in Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Ernest says: 'it's not sincerity that matters, it's style'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by T A Francis (talkcontribs) 20:28, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why "Palladium"?

[edit]

Does anyone have references for why this name was chosen? It originates as a Pre-Classical Greek statue or idol (allegedly stolen from Troy), and was given to a new asteroid after which the metal, discovered shortly after, was named. Was it used for other theatres before this one? Why? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 212.95.237.92 (talk) 15:55, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent question, strangely unremarked upon in the literature. :-( 31.51.227.127 (talk) 18:45, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A glance at Matcham's facade suggests that the name refers to Palladian architecture (the school of Andrea Palladio), with perhaps a pun on the precious metal and a reference to other classical theatre names of the period such as Lyceum and Coliseum.
