Gentlemen v Players

[edit]

"He hit Nichols for five fours in an over, Peter Smith for two fours and two sixes off another." says Alan Ross. "H. T. Bartlett hit him (Smith) for 28 in an over in the Gentlemen v. Players match at Lord's in 1938", says Peter Smith's Wisden obituary Tintin 15:52, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There appears to be backing for both to be correct. The contemporary Wisden report (1939 edition, page 281, Other Matches at Lord's section) says: "Of four 6's which he hit, two were on drives far beyond the longest boundaries and one from Nichols, bowling at the pavilion end, fell on the highest part of the turret at the end of the grandstand. He followed with five 4's in an over from the same bowler, and two 4's and two 6's to the on in the next over from Peter Smith." However, the report next day in The Times reads: "He hit two 6's off consecutive balls off Smith, and the other four balls in that over each counted four runs." Thank you. So will add a note about the other version. Tintin 01:10, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
