X3D is seen as the next generation of the Virtual Reality Modelling Language VRML. Beside some extensions (e.g. Human Animation, Nurbs, GeoVRML etc.), a X3D file has the same content as a VRML97 file, but use a different syntax. X3D use a XML-like syntax instead of the OpenInventor-like syntax of VRML97.
