Women in Red

[edit]

Hi there, Nferranf, and welcome to Women in Red. It's good to have a Spanish-speaker interested in gender studies contributing to the EN wiki, especially as you have been involved in the organization of the Libraries_International_Convention. We hope that in addition to your research, you will also be inspired to write biographies of some of the women involved. In this connection, you should find it useful to look through our Primer for creating women's biographies. Please let me know if you run into any problems or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 13:42, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ian,
thanks for the welcoming. I wonder if you are the Ian Pigott I met doing research on a digital cultural heritage project for the European Commission Directorate on Information Society? That project was called COINE and run by the Manchester Metropolitan University. I have really good memories of our meetings!
Kind regards,
Núria Nferranf (talk) 14:23, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Núria, I was the one. I had a feeling I recognized your name and can now see who you are from your photograph. If I remember correctly, at the time you were representing Universita Oberta. COINE and similar projects were really successful and fun to manage. It's good to see you are carrying out such useful work on the Spanish Wikipedia gender gap and have collaborated on two interesting studies. They are both listed on our Research page. Please let me know if you are aware of any other important research reports which should be added to the list. As you can see, since I retired from the Commission I have been devoting efforts to Wikipedia, in particular to improving our coverage of women and their works. I look forward to seeing a draft of your first biography of a woman or perhaps on something related to women's achievements. There must be quite a few articles in your field of interest in Catalan and/or Spanish which deserve to be translated or adapted to the EN wiki. Let me know when you would like me to look through your first draft and help you along.--Ipigott (talk) 06:21, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So nice to meet you again and working with similar aims as back then! I am so proud and thankful for the opportunity to work on that project, conceptually it was quite advanced to concepts which are common to us nowadays such as the cloud and Wikipedia, Wikidata or WikiCommons. And you gave me several advices which I had followed them and help me with my research.
By the way, I have check your user page and you are working so hard on the matter!! Thanks! At the moment I am not editing, but I have ideas for edit-a-thons in my faculty. I let you know when the project will be more tangible.
I have also checked the list of articles in the Research page and you have all my referents and favourites. I have a list now of 105 on the matter, but I think is best to have the selection you have got. I have them on Zotero, I can add you to the folder if you want.
Cheers,
Núria Nferranf (talk) 08:32, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am not familiar with Zotero. Is it an openly accessible resource? If so, it might be interesting to include a link from Women in Red or from the related Meta pages.--Ipigott (talk) 13:01, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! Maybe you could add these articles which are the first on research addressing the gender gap in Wikipedia. I don't think they are on the Research Page:
Lam, Shyong T. K., Uduwage, Anuradha, Dong, Zhenhua, Sen, Shilad, Musicant, David R., Terveen, Loren, & Riedl, John (2011, October). WP: clubhouse? An exploration of Wikipedia's gender imbalance. In Proceedings of the 7th international symposium on Wikis and open collaboration (pp. 1-10).
Reagle, Joseph, & Rhue, Lauren (2011). Gender bias in Wikipedia and Britannica. International Journal of Communication, 5, 21. Nferranf (talk) 08:43, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
These two are listed under Gender gap on Meta. Our Women in Red listing does not go back so far. Yes, you are quite right that the projects we ran back in the 1990s and early 2000s frequently paved the way for future collaboration on projects such as Wikipedia and those involving libraries. It's good to see you are still involved in the same sector and like me are concerned about the gender gap. It's a pity to hear you are not keen to edit. If you intend to run editathons, you should try to gain some hands-on experience beforehand. Many of those running WikiEdu initiatives have written impressive articles while also assisting their students. And just look at all the articles created by your Irish friend Smirkybec. So there's a new piece of advice for you!!! Happy editing! (In future, unless you write to me on my user page, it would be useful if you could ping me if you want me to respond.)--Ipigott (talk) 10:21, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the shout out! Also, Wikimedia Community Ireland are a partner in a 3 year Erasmus+ project with partners in the Basque Country and Friesland, the results of which might interest you? We will be running a questionnaire aimed at educators and GLAM professionals in the near future, which I can share with you. Happy to lend a virtual hand as well :) Smirkybec (talk) 10:30, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear from you, Smirkybec. Your WikiWomen project looks interesting, especially as it involves schoolchildren. It seems to me than in general, education authorities should be giving far more attention to how pupils could benefit from learning about Wikipedia while receiving encouragement to create articles themselves. I would certainly be interested in hearing about progress but I expect there will also be reports in the GLAM Newsletter. Please let me know if I can help any new recruits on the EN Wiki. We certainly need them. After turning up your articles for Núria, I thought it would be useful to take a closer look. With the assistance of ORES and Rater, I've been through the list, re-rating those which appeared to deserve attention. Your overall scores are now pretty impressive. With the speed at which you are creating new articles, I'll no doubt have to take a new look before the end of the year. Great stuff!--Ipigott (talk) 12:45, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Natividad Yarza Planas

[edit]

Thank you for adding so much useful information to Natividad Yarza Planas, based on a translation of the article in Catalan. When using Google translate or other machine translation tools for articles about women, you need to pay particular attention to pronouns which, given their absence in Catalan and Spanish, are frequently rendered as the masculine "he" in English ("su" also often producing "his" rather than "her"). I've now been through the article making necessary corrections and given it a C rating on the talk page. I hope you will continue to improve existing articles and create some completely new ones. An impressive start to your editing career.--Ipigott (talk) 10:32, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

And congratulations on your first new article Catalina San Martín, the first of many I hope.--Ipigott (talk) 08:11, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Isidre Ferrer Abizanda moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Isidre Ferrer Abizanda, is not suitable as written to remain published. It appears there is a WP:UPE or WP:COI conflict. Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, and have addressed the UPE/COI issue, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. As per WP policy, please do not move into mainspace yourself. Onel5969 TT me 15:26, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I contributed to this article and had doubts whether to raise the COI issue or not. Dear Núria, I believe that the subject of the article is notable, however the issue seems to be that you have a conflict of interest, which is a description of a situation, not a judgement about your integrity, or about the quality of your work on this project. This is because you're the colleague of Isidre Ferrer Abizanda, per your user page. Hopefully I'm not wrong when I say that it would not require much for the article to be accepted at WP:AfC after you declare the conflict of interest; it's probably best to follow WP:UPE guidance. —Alalch E. 17:11, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Red 8th Anniversary

[edit]
Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap!
