A tag has been placed on Santosh Desai requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Bernd Teo Matthias, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/tf7b69p20k. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.)

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 09:04, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Bernd Teo Matthias requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The article Zinneke Parade has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication given of notability.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. TexasAndroid (talk) 16:08, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Zinneke Parade, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zinneke Parade. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. TexasAndroid (talk) 17:24, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I added some improvement suggestions to the article talk page Talk:Zinneke_Parade. I am willing to help improve the article. Contact me on my talk page if you wish to take up this offer --Senra (talk) 16:53, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Henry of Normandy has been proposed for deletion. The proposed-deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Writing biographies

It is not easy. Such article get deleted quickly for various reasons. This can be avoided if you take a few precautionary steps first before you start writing

  • do a little research. Pick one subject, such as Claude Alvin Villee Jr.
  • read the one source you have found and write down all the notable things you have found out about him. In this case, (from a very quick scan I did of here):
  • five decades teaching
  • first text-book (year of first printing?) translated into five languages
  • written or collaborated on 350 books/papers. Find a list and write down 10 of these as selected works
  • chaired the Committee on Honors in a Special Field
  • colleague of Dwain Hagerman
  • champion women's equality at Harvard medical school
  • raised the funds that launched the Laboratory of Human Reproduction and Reproductive Biology (LHRRB) with the help of Duncan Reid and Deans Burwell and Berry
  • had perfect pitch
  • now for each one of the above, you need to find at least one more reliable source for the statement. If you cannot find another source, scratch a line through the item. If at this point you do not have more than one line unscratched, you have a poor subject for wikipedia. Choose another subject and go back to the beginning. Doing it this way, you will not keep getting articles being deleted. If you get past this point, you will be writing an article
  • next (you are nearly ready to start writing) review what you have with another similar person that is already on wikipedia. In this case, start with Category:Molecular_biologists; picking a few at random: Maurice Wilkins, Ehud Gazit. Choose your own example. The point is, choose someone as close as you can to the type of person you are writing about
  • take the best example from another article and in one editing session copy the entire example article into your new article and remove everything about that other person but leaving the structure intact (such as infobox, section headings). That way you have something to work on
  • next start adding facts in the {{infobox scientist}} (the code at the top of the article) such as date of birth, death (if dead), field of study, colleagues, students
  • next add everything you had in your original list that has more than one reliable source. Reference the source using in-line references. See reliable sources and referencing
  • next look for words that can be wikilinked in your article such as biologist. To wikilink, put a pair of square brackets around your word or words such as [[scientist]]
  • finally ask another editor for help to improve the article further. I will gladly help

Good luck --Senra (Talk) 11:30, 18 September 2010 (UTC):[reply]

Hello, HenryXVII. You have new messages at Senra's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Hi. I'm afraid the Leonard Case, Jr. article you wrote is a copyright infringement of [1], since the text is too closely paraphrased. While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. For an example of close paraphrasing, consider the following. The source says:

Case wrote long descriptive letters to his friends while traveling and published numerous poems. In 1860 the Atlantic Monthly printed his "Treasure Trove," a mock-heroic narrative poem, which was published in book form late in 1872, dated 1873.

The article says:

Case wrote long descriptive letters and poems when he was traveling. His mock-heroic narrative poem, "Treasure Trove", was printed and published by the Atlantic Monthly in late 1872.

There are other passages that similarly follow too closely. You retain fragmented literal similarity in language here and also appropriate their organization of content.

So that it will not constitute a derivative work, this article should be rewritten in the temporary space that is now linked from the article's front. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".

Alternatively, if the material can be verified to be public domain or permission is provided, we can use the original text with proper attribution.

Please let me know if you have questions about this. I will be watching your talk page for a time, or you are welcome to come to mine. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:42, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

May I Revert Leonard Case, Jr. to A Former Version?

While I was writing Leonard Case, Jr., another user provided a new source about him, so I cited some information from it. Now.... May I revert it to a former version that contains less contents but may not be regarded as copyright infringement?Heinrich ⅩⅦ von Bayern (talk) 05:04, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean this version, we can do that. Copyright problems entered the article in the next edit. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:34, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that is OK. It is just the version I mean, before I cited information from the newly provided source.Heinrich ⅩⅦ von Bayern (talk) 11:57, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have done so. Please be careful in how you use sources. It's really imperative that you learn to rewrite from scratch to avoid further such issues. If English is not your first language (I don't know that to be the case, but I see you are very active here), this can be particularly challenging. I hope the links I provided you above will be helpful. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:02, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, it's like this: you can't use their language (even if you rearrange it) and you can't use their organization (even if you change the language). You have to use your own organization and language in order to avoid being too close to them. The only time you can use their language and order is if you are quoting, and you have to mark your quotes very plainly with quotation marks and put a reference right next to them. We are required to keep our quotes brief and to have some good reason for using them (see WP:NFC), not just because they said it well. :) It helps to have a lot of sources to use, since you're less likely to take from one that way. When you don't have a lot of sources, it can help to leave out details and stay pretty basic. When you finish writing something, read over it and your source and ask yourself if they sound similar. If they do, you probably need to rewrite it. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:16, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Eleanor, Fair Maid of Brittany

Morning! I noticed some of the work you've been doing on Eleanor, Fair Maid of Brittany. If it's helpful, I can offer some advice on good academic sources for the period; I notice you're having to use some sources like this blog which probably wouldn't pass the "authorative source" test. Feel free to drop me a message on my talk page if that would be useful to you. Hchc2009 (talk) 09:11, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delay! Looks like the article's growing well. If you're looking for a good general source for the period and the events surrounding Eleanor, I'd recommend Carpenter, David. (2004) Struggle for Mastery: The Penguin History of Britain 1066-1284. London: Penguin. ISBN 9780140148244. If you've got access to a good library, or don't mind buying a specialist book, you'd probably also like Church, Stephen D. (ed) (2007) King John: New Interpretations. Woodbridge, UK: Boydell Press. ISBN 9780851159478.
Incidentally, give me a shout if you'd like me to do a quick copy-edit on the article at any point. Hchc2009 (talk) 12:37, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Meant to say, a couple of on-line (free) sources for the period include The Angevin Empire and England under the Angevins. Both old texts, but still good value for the period you're looking at. Hchc2009 (talk) 18:15, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I read your comment concerning Eleanor of Brittany as a possible Countess of Richmond either for her article or the article on Earl of Richmond. Your comment was in Surtscina's talk page. Please see my comment and whether it gives you an improved road to follow on whether and how Eleanor can be listed as Countess of Richmond, beyond what I and others wrote there (her article or the article on Earls of Richmond) in the last three months. I'd welcome more discussion Breizhtalk (talk) 04:03, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at some of the articles you've edited, you don't happen to be able to read Mandarin at all? I'm trying to find someone who could do me a favour by confirming the translations of a couple of unusual words, and my own Mandarin Chinese is pretty minimal. Thanks! I'm doing an expansion of the battlements article in user space at the moment. I've found two references to unique Chinese medieval battlement equipment in the (admittedly not extensive) English literature. The first is wooden and cloth shields called chhii, which were positioned/fixed on the battlements to provide protection for the soldiers. The second are chieh-kao, screens of reeds mounted on a long piece of pivoted wood, which could then be swung in front of a battlement, or set light to and dipped down on the pole onto enemy siege towers to make them catch fire.
What I wasn't sure about from the source, though, is whether these two Chinese names have any literal meaning. For example, the bit of a European battlement called a machicolation literally means "neck crusher" in French, which makes sense because it was used for dropping stones on people's heads. I couldn't work out if the names for those two bits of equipment meant something in particular, or if they were just their names (e.g. a gate just means "a gate" in English - it doesn't have any other meaning).
In the meantime, I shall continue to try and find some sort of further literature on Chinese battlements - I'm having real trouble finding English language sources... Hchc2009 (talk) 07:22, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated - thanks! Hchc2009 (talk) 08:32, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nicely done - thanks for the help, and thank your friends for me as well! Hchc2009 (talk) 09:56, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Below the Salt.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Below the Salt.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Hi. When you recently edited Eleanor, Fair Maid of Brittany, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages The Virgin and Thomas Keightley (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
