Though the Romans used a decimal system for whole numbers, reflecting how they counted in Latin, they used a duodecimal system for fractions, because the divisibility of twelve (12 = 3 × 2 × 2) makes it easier to handle the common fractions of 1/3 and 1/4 than does a system based on ten (10 = 2 × 5). Uncia dots were added to S for fractions from seven to eleven twelfths, just as tallies were added to V for whole numbers from six to nine.

The arrangement of the dots was variable and not necessarily linear. Five dots arranged like :·: (as on the face of a dice) are known as a quincunx from the name of the Roman fraction/coin. The Latin words sextans and quadrans are the source of the English words sextant and quadrant.

IIII vs IV

The notation of Roman numerals has varied through the centuries. Originally, it was common to use IIII to represent four, because IV represented the Roman god Jupiter, whose Latin name, IVPPITER, begins with IV. The subtractive notation (which uses IV instead of IIII) has become the standard notation only in modern times. For example, Forme of Cury, a manuscript from 1390, uses IX for nine, but IIII for four. Another document in the same manuscript, from 1381, uses IV and IX. A third document in the same manuscript uses IIII, IV, and IX. Constructions such as IIIII for five, IIX for eight or VV for 10 have also been discovered. Subtractive notation arose from regular Latin usage: the number 18 was [duodeviginti] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help) or “two from twenty”; the number 19 was [undeviginti] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help) or "one from twenty". The use of subtractive notation increased the complexity of performing Roman arithmetic, without conveying the benefits of a full positional notation system.

Likewise, on some buildings it is possible to see MDCCCCX, for example, representing 1910 instead of MCMX – notably Admiralty Arch in London. The Leader Building in Cleveland, Ohio, at the corner of Superior Avenue and E.6th Street, is marked MDCCCCXII, representing 1912 instead of MCMXII. Another notable example is on Harvard Medical School's Gordon Hall, which reads MDCCCCIIII for 1904 instead of MCMIV. In Dubrovnik, Croatia, a commemorative inscription marking the 1000th anniversary of King Tomislav’s coronation (Croatia’s first King), appears as DCCCCXXV - MDCCCCXXV (925 -1925).

Tennis

Amovrvs - Joshua - has recently begun competing in tennis again after a 12-year (twelve year) break from competing in tennis. The USTA Open tournament New England somewhere near Boston in late August or September 1996 is the last competition match before resuming on June 5th 2008 with the Somerset Swansea Tennis Association - SSTA - which is a member of the United States Tennis Association New England - USA Tennis New England. He went undefeated in match play starting at #4 singles and moving up to #3 singles in league play. He lost one match in his challenge against the #2 player on his #8 Smash team in a two and a half hour best 2 out of three sets that went to three sets. His team is currently in the finals of the league for this summer season 2008, where he won his final match against team #7's #3 player 6-1, 6-0, the son of a former summer 1989 coach from Middleborough, MA Steve Charest with his son Jon Charest in defeat. Smash team which I was on won the league for the Summer of 2008. I went undefeated in league match play, only losing once to the #2 player on my team, as I mentioned earlier. I got ready for the fall 2008 competition season of L'oeuf which is the organization Joshua started for competitive tennis, meaning The Egg in French. This is where Love in tennis English comes from as the English mishear L'oeuf and pronounce it Love, which is in all actuality the Egg, as a zero looks like a chicken or other bird egg, or egg in general, or zero. I didn't get much match play in for the Fall 2008, Winter 2008/9, or Spring 2009. I joined the Lakeville Athletic Club in Lakeville, MA in January of this year 2009, and got unlimited ball machine. I hit with the ball machine a few times a week in January and February. In February of this year 2009, I rejoined the Bridgewater Fitness Center, in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, which I had not belonged to since probably about October or November 2003. I (Joshua) won the summer 2009 Middleborough Men's A league this summer for the first time in probably 20 years playing this league since I started playing it around my age of 15. And for the update on my tennis. I have been told that I am B level at the Lakeville Athletic Club, where I play tennis at. The levels A1 and A are above me. I am trying to get better in tennis and win as many matches as I can and improve my win/loss games percentage, currently at 59.7% as of today December 6, 2009 AD. I have also been singing in choir practice for 3 times now at the Titicut Church in North Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States of America, United Nations. I did the craft show this past Friday and Saturday. And I have to improve my night time much still, which has been a struggle for a while now. I have lost some interest currently in competing in tennis. I need a rest for a while and get my strength back up. I am focusing on moving to a good apartment or house finally, getting my girl, having kids, fixing my debt, making more money, stuff like this, the more important things in life for me right now. :). Which should be and is my priority anyways. :).

The Metonic Roman Republican calendar, for year 2010 AD, Kalends Martius is 5 March 2011 AD. This is determined this way. Martius must be within the vernal or spring equinox. Kalends is when the first sliver of light of the moon is seen after the new moon. Kalends is a day after the New Moon. Mercedonius or Intercalculation month, or the 13th month, is this year, to give the Kalends Martius within the appropriate time.

On January 3, 2010 AD Gregorian, now, which is one day after perihelion Earth-Sun 2010, I figured out the importance of Mut, which some can be seen at the Precinct of Mut at Karnak part of Luxor. About 2000 years ago, or during the 1st Century AD, Mut worship drastically decreased, thus led to the near complete destruction of Mut temple complex. Meh.
