Gambling in the United States
Gambling, more often referred to as "gaming" brings in over $60 billion dollars annually, and thrives in The United States. Many levels of government have authorized multiple forms of gambling: everything from bingo games in church basements, to multi-million dollar poker tournaments. The industry provided 144,870 jobs as of November, 2004. Recently, Native American tribes have used legal protection (and reservation status) to open casinos. While proponents of gambling in the United States say it provides valuable tax revenue and job opportunities, some community groups oppose it because they say it leads to corruption and higher crime rates. Online gambling is a fairly recent phenomenon, but its legal status is currently under scrutiny.
