The Boeng Tonle Chhmar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area of Cambodia on the edge of the Tonle Sap lake. It is located in Peam Bang Commune in Kampong Thom Province. The sanctuary was gazetted on the 1st of January, 1999 and covers an area of 28,000 hectares.[1]

Location and access

Boeng Tonle Chhmar and the connected creek system are located on the flood plain of the Tonle Sap. This flood plain in turn is part of the Mekong River Basin. Boeng Chhmar area is close to the center of the lake and located on the northern shore.


The southern and western boundaries of Boeng Chhmar area overlap with Tonle Sap lakeshore and the northern and the eastern boundaries are in floodplain forest. The protected area lies within the administrative boundaries of Peam Bang commune, Stoung District, Kampong Thom province. There are six floating villages, Pov Veung, Stueng Chrov, Pechakrei, Doung Sdaeng, Peam Bang and Ba Lat village, in the neighborhood of Boeng Chhmar area.[2]
