Etymology 1
[edit]From Old Khmer *ចារិក (*cārika, “to inscribe by engraving”), an extended form of ចារ៑ (cār, “to inscribe (with a stylus), to engrave; to draw a straight line; to plant in rows”), from which Thai จาร (jaan) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ចារឹក (caarɨk), Lao ຈາຣຶກ (chā rưk).
