Inherited from Prakrit 𑀉𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀮 (utthala, sandhill, *shallow), from Sanskrit उत्स्थल (utsthala, name of an island, *shallow), from उद्- (ud-) +‎ स्थल (sthala). Cognate with Marathi उथळ (uthaḷ).
