[edit]Derived from its majuscule counterpart Γ (G), from the Phoenician letter 𐤂 (g, “gimel”).

- Lower-case gamma, the third letter of the ancient Greek alphabet. Its name was γάμμα and it represented a voiced velar stop: /ɡ/; before velars, it represented a velar nasal: /ŋ/. It is preceded by β and followed by δ.

[edit]- As a single consonant, a fricative IPA(key): [ɣ] (or [ʝ] before a front vowel).
- ⟨γγ⟩ is [ŋɡ] ([ɲɟ] before a front vowel); commonly reduced to [ɡ] (or [ɟ]) in informal speech. The gamma remains a fricative ([ŋɣ] or [ɲʝ]) in some words, e.g. εγγενής, έγγραφο, συγγραφέας.
- ⟨γκ⟩ is [ɡ] word-initially and in some loanwords, [ŋɡ] otherwise; commonly reduced to [ɡ] in informal speech.
- ⟨γξ⟩ is [ŋks].
- ⟨γχ⟩ is [ŋx] (or [ɲç] before a front vowel).
