Hungarian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Lexicalization of earlier ált + -l (ablative suffix). The original ált is from Proto-Ugric *ᴕltɜ (“across, over”) (compare Northern Mansi [script needed] (ūltta, “across, over”), Eastern Khanty [script needed] (uʌti, “across, over”)), from *o (“that”) + [Term?] (ablative suffix) + [Term?] (locative suffix).[1][2][3]
Pronunciation
[edit]Postposition
[edit]által
- (archaic, dialectal) through, over
- by (by the actions of …), by means of, by dint of, owing to
Usage notes
[edit]This term may also be part of the split form of a verb prefixed with által-, the alternative form of át-, occurring when the main verb does not follow the prefix directly. It can be interpreted only with the related verb form, irrespective of its position in the sentence, e.g. meg tudták volna nézni (“they could have seen it”, from megnéz). For verbs with this prefix, see át-; for an overview, Appendix:Hungarian verbal prefixes.
