spring constant (plural spring constants)

  1. (physics) A characteristic of a spring which is defined as the ratio of the force affecting the spring to the displacement caused by it.

Usage notes

Usually denoted with the letter "k" in formulae, as in the formula F = k·x, where "F" is the force applied and "x" is the displacement.
