[edit]From Middle Dutch smitse, reformed from earlier smisse by analogy with smit (modern smid), from Old Dutch *smiththa, from Proto-Germanic *smiþjǭ. The development *-þj- > -ss- is also found in wisse, while *-þþ- becomes -tt- in lat, mot.
