From Latin quadrāgēnārius (containing 40) + -an, either directly or via French quadragénaire, from Latin quadrāgēnus (40 each) + -ārius (-ary), from quadrāgintā (four tens, forty). Cognate with quadragenary, quadragenarious, and quadragene.
