Etymology

Contraction of Old Polish księgyni (sovereign), from Proto-Slavic *kъnęgyni, from *kъnędzь (prince). Cognate with Lower Sorbian kněni, Upper Sorbian knjeni and Russian княгиня (knjaginja, princess). Doublet of kniahini (wife of a Russian or Lithuanian prince) a loanword from Russian.
