Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *kʷr̥- (to do, make, build), probably via an extension *kʷr̥H- in order to account for the acute tone in the Baltic forms.[1][2] Cognates include Latvian kur̃t (to light, kindle)[2] and Sanskrit कृणोति (kṛṇóti, to injure, do,[2] make[2]).

The appurtenance of the "kindle, light" meanings to the root *kʷr̥- is uncertain. It is traditionally accepted and explained as originating from expressions such as ùgnį kùrti (to light a fire); however, it could very well come from a different root, usually reconstructed as Proto-Indo-European *kerh₃- (heat, fire; to burn).[1] In this case, compare Lithuanian kárštas (hot),[3] Russian кури́ть (kurítʹ, to smoke),[2] Latin carbō m (charcoal),[2] and Old Norse hyrr m (fire).[2]
