Inherited from Malay jaksa, from Javanese ꦗꦏ꧀ꦱ (jaksa, “prosecutor; auditor”), from Old Javanese dyakṣa, dhyakṣa, adhyakṣa (“inspector, superintendent, supervisor, guardian; highest judicial official”), from Sanskrit अध्यक्ष (adhyakṣa, “inspector, chairperson”). Doublet of adiaksa. The sense of prosecutor is a semantic loan from Dutch officier van justitie and Japanese 檢事(けんじ) (kenji).
