Etymology

Apparently from Middle High German *hiewesic, from Middle High German hie, (here, adverb) + Middle High German *wesic (being), as in Middle High German abewesic (absent), selpwesic (intrinsic, essential), etc. Equivalent to hie (here) +‎ wesend +‎ -ig.
