[edit]From Ile Eugene, the 19th century French name of St Peter Island of South Australia, after Eugene Hamelin, commander of the ship Naturaliste. The name was used by the French naturalist Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest for the specific epithet of Macropus eugenii, where he found the species he described.
