[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese cadeira, from Vulgar Latin *cathédra, from Latin cathedra, from Ancient Greek καθέδρα (kathédra), from κατά (katá, “above”) + ἕδρα (hédra, “chair”). Cognate with Portuguese cadeira and Spanish cadera.
