allgemeine Hochschulreife f (genitive allgemeine Hochschulreife, no plural)

  1. The status of a person who following a matriculation exam (generically named Reifeprüfung, Hochschulreifeprüfung, Maturitätsprüfung, in Germany since the 1880s specifically Abitur, Abiturium and outside still Matura or Maturität) qualifies to study any subject or pursue any degree at any kind of university, as opposed to only university of applied sciences (which happens in the FRG with Fachhochschulreife, not by itself valid in Austria) or only specific subjects (fachgebundene Hochschulreife in Germany, outside Berufsmatura or Fachmatura).
