From Old Galician-Portuguese nomẽar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin nōmināre, present active infinitive of nōminō (I name), from nōmen (name), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁nómn̥ (name). Compare nominar, a borrowed doublet. Cognate with Portuguese nomear and Spanish nombrar.
