[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese nomẽar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin nōmināre, present active infinitive of nōminō (“I name”), from nōmen (“name”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁nómn̥ (“name”). Compare nominar, a borrowed doublet. Cognate with Portuguese nomear and Spanish nombrar.
