Etymology

From Tasman +‎ -ia, after the Dutch naval explorer Abel Tasman, who visited and documented the island and New Zealand in 1642.

  1. One of the six federal states of Australia, consisting of one large, eponymous and several much smaller islands, off the eastern part of Australia's south coast, having its capital at Hobart.

      Osteoporosis Australia is calling for the 'no hat, no play' policy in school playgrounds to be reassessed in the ACT and Tasmania, because children are not getting enough sunlight.
  2. (historical) The colony that became the state of Tasmania at federation in 1901.
  3. The large island of Australia comprising the majority of the state of Tasmania's land area and on which most of its inhabitants live.
