instalment Commonwealth???
[edit]Why is instalment described as Commonwealth spelling? In the citations I quoted Thomas Carlyle using installment. May the person who added it have mixed up the tags for US and Commonwealth? Shall I reverse them? Bogorm 17:09, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- 2 "l" form overwhelmingly dominant in US, rough parity outside US per Google News. DCDuring Holiday Greetings! 18:57, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- See instalment#Usage notes. I haven't checked to see whether there is a difference by etymology/meaning in commonwealth usage of the two spellings. It would be hard to imagine such a difference being sustainable, however. DCDuring Holiday Greetings! 19:13, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- The OED allows installment as a variant spelling only for the sense of installation, not for a payment, but they have evidently missed the Carlyle cite (unless, of course, it is from an American translation?) Dbfirs 19:33, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, what I wrote in jest may turn out to be true, because elsewhere in his works, Carlyle seems to have used the correct British spelling of instalment, but I need to find this exact quote before I'm sure. Dbfirs 19:55, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

"Anything that is performed in parts, spread over time." Not the preceding sense ("A part of a broadcast or published serial"): this challenged sense appears to refer to the entire series. Might just be an error...? Equinox ◑ 23:30, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
