First attested as uuestsagnem in 918-948. From Middle Dutch Sassenem, from Old Dutch Saxnem. Equivalent to Saso (a given name) +‎ -en- +‎ heim (home). The first element is unlikely to refer to the Saxon peoples. Compare Saaksum, Lutke Saaxum and Saaxumhuizen.
