Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Potentially attested as widemortele in 1263, attested with certainty as Memortel in 1838-1857. If the oldest attestation does in fact refer to the current settlement, then the toponym is a compound derived from Middle Dutch wede (“forest, brushwood”) and mortel (“low-lying muddy place”).
