Etymology

From Middle French baptiser, from Old French baptisier, a Lua error: Parameter "nocap" is not used by this template., present active infinitive of baptīzō, from Ancient Greek βαπτῑ́ζω (baptī́zō, I immerse, I baptize). Replaced the inherited Old French baptoier, batoyer.
