South Korea and romance. Is it still a Thing? Traditionally, yes; an overwhelming yes if you celebrate most all the annual romance days (per the Korean Herald):

Jan. 14 – Diary Day
On this day, lovers ring in the New Year by gifting their significant other a fresh diary -- perfect for chronicling their romance going forward.
Feb. 14 – Valentine's Day
Tradition dictates that women take the lead, bestowing chocolates upon their beloveds.
March 14 – White Day
A month after Valentine's Day, the tables turn. Men who received chocolates the month before return the favor by presenting candy to their admirers.
April 14 – Black Day
Singles take center stage, with friends commiserating over jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) in a celebration of self-love.
May 14 – Rose Day
Men gift roses to their partners as a symbol of love.
June 14 – Kiss Day
No further explanation needed.
July 14 – Silver Day
Also dubbed "Ring Day," men gift silver accessories to their partners on this day.
Aug. 14 – Green Day/Music Day
Green Day calls for a romantic escape into nature, while Music Day sets the stage for dancing the night away with one's significant other.
Sept. 14 – Photo Day
The day marks an occasion for couples to document their love through commemorative photos.
Oct. 14 – Wine Day
Lovers enjoy an evening of wine over dinner.
Nov. 14 – Movie Day
Movie Day encourages couples to enjoy a classic date night, setting aside time to watch their favorite films together.
Dec. 14 – Hug Day/Money Day
Rounding out the year, the day involves embracing each other warmly and/or splurging on extravagant gifts.

I love these. OK, I am not actually into Valentine's Day. I think it's kind of weird to turn a holiday for a saint (in a religion I don't practice!) into an occasion for romantic gifts. But--Music Day! Diary Day! Movie Day! It's like someone came up with a blueprint for dating.

No shade to those who do celebrate, but I’m not into it either. First because it comes during a season when there are many other important personal dates for my partner and I to celebrate, and second because, as I used to tell people in high school, it feels strange to celebrate the day the patron saint of epilepsy was beheaded 😬. We have plenty of other holidays that we’ve taken out of their original context, so I’m happy for folks if they enjoy it, but some of these sound way better to me! I love the Black and Green days!

Happy Valentine's Day to all Beanies! I hope everyone is enjoying their K-Drama rom-com of choice!

It's been a quiet week as the Lunar New Year winds down and things start going back to normal though I am watching the news coming out of the U.S. with more and more horror.

The one thing that has been running in a loop through my mind is:

If South Koreans could swiftly nip a coup attempt by their conservative misogynist president, why can't Americans do the same since that's what's happening now thanks to Trump and Musk?

I am extremely worried about friends, family, and colleagues in the U.S., most of whom are not White and not male and not straight.

THIS WEEK IN KOREAN WOMEN'S NEWS:

1. South Korean woman punished for biting off tongue of would-be rapist gets retrial

A South Korean woman, 78, who in 1965 received a suspended jail sentence for biting off part of the tongue of a man attempting to rape her will have her case re-examined.

A Busan court on Thursday accepted Choi Mal-ja’s appeal after previous failed retrial bids dating back to 2020.

In a 2020 interview with The Korea Herald, Choi said the prosecutor even pressured her to marry the man. “I said I did nothing wrong, and [the prosecutor] said if I didn’t comply, I would have to spend the rest of my life in jail,” Choi added, recounting how she was coerced into accepting her sentence.

Choi pursued higher studies in the 2000s and said as she became more educated, she realised the extent of the injustice she had endured, motivating her to seek a retrial with the help of a women’s group that supports victims of sexual violence.

2. BLACKPINK's Jennie, aespa recognized in Billboard's Women in Music Awards

K-pop acts aespa and Jennie from BLACKPINK won recognition for their influence in the music industry with honors at the upcoming 2025 Billboard Women in Music Awards.

According to Billboard on Tuesday, the four-piece girl group aespa will receive the Group of the Year award.

Jennie from K-pop icon BLACKPINK will also be honored with the Global Force award, given to individuals who have made notable contributions to the music industry.

"...I am extremely worried about friends, family, and colleagues in the U.S., most of whom are not White and not male and not straight...." It is horrifying.

This week in America, Sen. Mitch McConnell, a polio survivor, an architect of the Republican conservative movement and a master of legislative procedure, joined the resistance. While I haven't always agreed with Sen. McConnell, he's got backbone and he's highly respected by Republican and Democrats alike in the Senate. Throwing in your lot with the opposition is setting down a marker.

Hmmm, I think in SK, in general, its citizens actually care about the country, know and acknowledge its history, and it helps this was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Meanwhile in The States, Trumpians are greedy and selfish loyalists and those who *don't* identify as a Trump supporter but "just voted for him because he had a platform and she didn't" are willfully ignorant idiots who didn't care about all the things people would say would happen.

@britney - I suspect we're in agreement about the results of the 2024 elections. But I don't think it's helpful to paint Trump voters with a broad brush as "greedy, selfish loyalists" and "willfully ignorant idiots." There were many dependably Democratic voters who crossed party lines because they felt that their issues and concerns were not being heard; Trump's message tapped into something that led a whole lot of people to believe that their lives would be better with him in the White House. I think it's a lot to ask ordinary citizens to understand and care about the implications of a Trump presidency for our democracy, when they are struggling to pay the rent, fuel the car, and put food on the table.

Meanwhile, the Democrats repeatedly shot themselves in the foot, hiding Biden's infirmities, waiting so long to replace him as their candidate, and failing to come up with a strong argument in their favor beyond "Trump is a danger to democracy." (It may be true, but it's not going to win you votes.) They have been outmaneuvered by the Republicans at every turn, losing all three branches of government. The only way they can turn things around is to start winning national, state, and local elections and regaining control over at least some of the levers of government to restore the system of checks and balances.

As @tizzy points out, the country has become so polarized. Media outlets large and small are one-sided megaphones promoting their own truths and "alternative facts." Trump's core base of supporters who only watch and listen to Fox News, Joe Rogan, etc. are as firmly convinced as you are that people in the opposite party are crazy, deluded, or unpatriotic (or all of the above). Many people on the left automatically consider anything and everything Trump does is bad and corrupt, often without bothering to educate themselves on the issue. (I, for one, fully support eliminating the penny.) As long as both sides continue to refuse to listen to each other, we will remain a deeply divided nation with an endangered democracy.

I heartily recommend the Tangle Newsletter, which takes an important issue and shares what both the left and the right are saying about it. It's one of the few places I've found where liberals and conservatives come together to engage in meaningful discussion.

In a 2023 article highlighting Choi’s legal ordeal, The Korea Herald stated: “Though unthinkable and abhorrent today, it was not uncommon for courts of the 1960s and 1970s in South Korea to play matchmaker between rape victims and their rapists.”
Just wow.
And yes, it’s horrifying to live here with multiple assaults on the law every day. I made a little poem:

I miss the Rule of Law

The main problem is that the "cutting" you are praising is being done by an individual who was NOT ELECTED by the people and is being done in a very "personal" way. I'm all for cutting waste, but they are not just cutting waste, they are cutting humane spending and jobs that need to be reviewed before just randomly doing away with based on ONE individual's personal agenda. I fear that it will be more than painful to many in the long run.

I am sorry to get political on here, but I had to respond to state the "opposing" opinion that we are not all optimistic about what is happening in the US and the margin is very close as to who supports this so called president.

9

Whereas the problem I have is that the 'cutting' is on -foreign aid, medical research, and the intelligence services. Not what I automatically think of as 'waste'. Everyone has their own views I know!

6

Whether or not the cuts will have the results you anticipate is an open question, but the bigger issue for me is the way he's quickly dismantling our democracy. He's taken actions that are clearly illegal and in some cases unconstitutional, and there doesn't seem to be anyone willing to step up and oppose him.

Honestly, american politics these days feels like being stuck in an old episode of Firefly (Jaynestown) - this must be what going mad feels like. No! This must be what going mad feels like. I can't take this bullshit seriously, and yet, there is a couchfucker lecturing people about democracy in Munich today.

As someone in the US with all the same concerns, I think there are a number of reasons why coup pushback has been harder here than in the SK. First, because Seoul is both where much of the population lives and the political capitol, it's easier to get huge numbers of people out into the streets quickly in front of and around government offices. While the greater DC area is highly populated, the city itself isn't even in the top 20 by population. There are lots of protests breaking out across the country but it's hard to get a critical mass of people where they are most needed. Also, Yoon decided to launch his coup after his popularity had already tanked and his party had just lost a ton of seats in a midterm election. Neither of those things are true right now in the US - Trump's popularity is the highest its ever been and Republicans control both houses of Congress and the Supreme Court. Therefore there isn't a lot of incentive yet for members of his own party to turn on him and the leverage of the opposition is much more constrained. Finally, while SK's democracy is relatively recent and many people there actually experienced what it was like to live under a dictatorship and have no desire to go back, folks born and raised in the US don't have that experience, and therefore I think haven't grasped yet just how high the stakes are.

Happy Friday and Valentine's Day, Beanies! It's a busy and tiring week for me, so I'll try to keep today's entry semi-short because, unlike certain someone, I'm not freshly off beach vacation and don't have lots of energy left.

First, we have a new OST - “The story is to be continued” from BATTLE THROUGH THE HEAVENS/FIGHTS BREAK SPHERE anime. Quite a pretty song, but then again, all LYN's anime ones are good. Maybe it's because there aren't as many OSTs in animated series compared to idol dramas, so makers invest a bit more effort in the few they do have? Surprisingly I even found it with official subs, yay:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxMPKE46huE

Also LYN had a stage at CCTV's Lantern Festival gala, performing his newest trademark hit “Hardworking people” together with China's Disability Performance Group. Gotta say, adding sign language (I assume they were translating song's lyrics) instead of standard backup dancing for this song was simply genius. Yuning himself learnt a bit of it too, look:
https://x.com/Bigsislilred/status/1889683652851781690

The stage itself (beaded embroidery on his jacket is hand-made, btw, boy is getting more expensive with each passing day), which was super well received by media:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPzYs1bd5Lc

Outside of these 2 events he's been pretty lowkey since returning from his vacation, finally giving me space to catch up on his multiple livestreams lately. Starting from third to last, where we still got 2 songs left – namely the already familiar to yall “The sound of snow falling” (THE STORY OF YANXI PALACE OST). Very fitting for the season, right?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WOEe_JdE2k

And another one from his all-time classics repertoire - “The worldly tavern”. Don't you love how this silly goose thinks that wearing designer shades indoors=being cool?))) This song lacks the winter season vibe, unlike the one above, but no worries, he'll also add snowflake filer to makeup for it. Forget the somewhat serious singing, I'm cracking up through it because of him lol:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5aYGZ7EDl4

Second to last livestream – which birthed some truly epic sick burns from No Damns Left To Give troll gege, like him calling haters “nothing more than content for his streams” or this quote: “I know, you're worried I might say the wrong thing, but I literally don't care anymore” (c) - had only a bit of music because he preferred to yap in his cute strawberry-like sweater (at least this time he didn't flip over his clothes being compared to food) and even cuter beanie with little bows everywhere (how macho!). 2 more songs, including his own New Year-themed oldie “A happy (new) year”:

And something new – cover of Li Jian's “The wind over the wheat field” (his constructor – and expensive af – glasses send me). Song is sweet, but not my type, and gosh, was he messing it up! What's with the hardcore party mood all of sudden, Ning-ge?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZOZmdTFW90

Bonuses: Lantern Festival rehearsal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7Eoz8nM0F8

Its vlog feat little acapella of “Circle of fate” - wow, it sound even better live! hope we're getting full livestream performance soon – and even more sing language. If you're wondering what the red velvet suit was for, he wore it for talking segment of gala, but most of it was cut, iirc, aside of small clip of him successfully solving characters-based riddles (that's the boy who claims to hate studying, heh):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA8P5NPNYLU

Giant kid being all too happy go home from work (he's bouncing! I cannot):
https://x.com/love03150108/status/1888591619475353738

I wish I had strength to also properly cover his latest resort livestream - including his ramblings about refusing learning to swim yet (he's SCARED, ok? not the least of being paparazzi-d in his swimming shorts only – well, that's one way to shift the topic from your phobia, ge), gaining weight from holidays “revenge eating” (it kinda sounded like he's not planning to lose those “extra” kgs soon... would've been great), flashing his hotel room along with bed when moving camera from balcony inside (surprisingly, he's not a messy inhabitant at all can't relate – my bedroom rivals warehouses from horror, tho that pillow placement looked sus – does he sleeps hugging it? oh my) and having fans to set off fireworks in front of his window to make him extra happy (awww!) - but I'm drained already, and it's not even a weekend yet *sigh* Idk what awaits us next week – he has no planned public schedule, I believe – so that's gonna be a surprise if something does happen. Till then, stay tuned!

Just dropped extra bonus - Valentine's Day roses (in fandom color):

This might be the second best Hardworking People yet, behind the original on Melody Journey which is hard to beat for pathos. I love this rendition, and the choir, and the families of those young people must be just thrilled. What a great effort by LYN.

If there is a song that deserves to be shared with as many people as possible it is Hardworking People. I really liked this idea of the song being interpreted (sung!?) live in sign language. How unique.

Of course he has to wear shades 😎 otherwise won't the snow get into his eyes. 😂 Or some such perfectly logical reason. Er, maybe to avoid getting blinded by his own beauty.

Happy Friday, open threaders! I just wanted to invite everyone on DB to go their fanwall and post any favorite music you've had this year. There have been great OST's on these kdramas that I've been listening to, kpop groups who have basically disbanded coming back this year, and more music collaborations than I can keep track of. We'll start now and through Sunday in your time zone. Hope to see you there!

And yes, I'm doing ok with the Hunger Games portion of post COVID US health decision-making. It's really my kids that will be reaping what is being sown right now, but I have hope for them. The pendulum will swing so far that there will be backlash at some point. That's how we got here.

In Kdrama watching news, I've been totally engrossed with the usual suspects: Love Scout, Motel California, Trauma Heroes, and Check-in Hanyang, Study Group. I've also watched 3 BLs this week which honestly are so angst-free and wholesome. I just want to point out "See Your Love" which is Taiwanese-Japanese and has a deaf-mute main character due to an infection (that was likely vaccine preventable, which hit the nail on the head for me this week). It's just so nice. Short and I would recommend it if you want something between the other shows you're watching. Also watching Chuang Asia Season 2 where international boys compete to be part of the next international pop group. It's so adorable and my fav is the youngest, Omar, who is 15 years old and just so doe eyed and innocent.

A show I'm thinking about starting: Unmasked, but think I'll be a mess crying every episode and I can't go into that right now. And Melomovie-- that looks so soft and pretty.

I talked to my daughter last evening and was so saddened because her differential equations professor, a petite little Japanese woman was struck while walking across the street by a truck. She said that it didn't even slow down. She's alive, but has multiple facial fractures and bones. So if you're a praying person and believe in a higher power, this is one of the times that prayers for a stranger would be very appreciated. My daughter was making cards for her when I called her last evening.

I didn't mean to end this on such a depressing note, which is why music is my happy pill and I hope you join me on the fan wall this weekend!

Woooow, I don't think I've ever thought the phrase "I hate the Hollywood system" before but I JUST experienced that and it really was just 😶😕😯🙁😟 wow.

Even though I've had moments of being disappointed in Hollywood choices, I kinda also didn't care. Live action/CGI version of Disney movies from my childhood? Ehh, I'll watch it if I'm curious enough (so far I've only seen 3 and 2 were my childhood favorites haha). A million sequels and remakes? Ehh, I don't have to watch them. Superhero fatigue? Again, don't have to watch them.

But seeing a trailer for a live action How To Train Your Dragon just broke me haha. I don't even know how old I was when it came out nor when I first saw it but I love that movie. I haven't even seen the final movie cause I can't see them say goodbye to each other.

And now these greedy corporate clowns in suits made the EXACT same movie but in live action. WHY?! Just watch the original. There is literally nothing different in this trailer. As they are speaking, all I'm seeing and hearing is the original actors (I think Gerald Butler is in the movie so I'm *really* hearing the original haha)

The dragons DO look just like the original which is interesting but I don't know how to explain it in a technical sense.

I'm honestly surprised by how intense my reaction was haha. All I think is just watch the original. There was zero need to remake this (which could also be said for many other projects but I digress [though maybe I'll mini rant about that later])

I'm so over with the remakes! Animation and movies with actors are two different mediums, neither of them is better. Why they continue to adapt every anime in "real" movie by using 80% of CGI?

I loved How To Train Your Dragon, it's such a good story. But I'm really not interested in the new one, the same for Snow White...

Have you read the How To Train Your Dragon books?
They are in a class of their own, and very different from any of the film adaptions.
What they have in common is that engaging in dragon training has some very serious consequences, and to be honest, I never yet got past the 8th book, not because the quality dropped, but because it was headed somewhere very dark, and little ol' me got scared.
Oh, and Toothless is small enough for Hiccup to carry him around in his shirt, peeping out of the opening for the head. And it's illustrated in kind of wild-growing pictures by the authoress.
To me, the animated films were very good, but ... filming the actual stories as told in the books would have been dynamite.

I don't mind it *as* much if they're trying to modernize it or add more context; like with Aladdin, regardless of the reaction & reception, it's clear they did make *some* changes such as with Jasmine or the clothing decisions. I think the bird was supposed to have some thing to do with legends of that culture (I could be wrong but I think it was). I think Beauty & The Beast made Belle the inventor. There was also the gay pairing.

But this 1-1 adapting where it's literally just the original is just so upsetting because this is the stuff newer generations learn of first. Like I think I once googled White Men Can't Jump and the remake showed up first! Same with Point Break.
Total Recall, Road House

Ugh, I swear I hate this lack of originality. And yes I know alot of movies are adapted from book or other mediums so it's not "original" but still. Sigh

For Aladdin, my issue is Aladdin was very bland. They made this movie about the genius and Jasmine. And it didn't like they made her successing her father. Aladdin was someone from the people with a pure heart, it's the main thing...

For Beauty and the Beast, again Luke Evans was really good as Gaston but neither Emma Watson neither Dan Simmon were good in their role. The CGI of the Beast weren't really good, they couldn't express his feelings like the animation was able to.

I'm not much of a music fan. Despite Kpopalypse and some Youtube suggestions I haven't actually heard any new k-music this year that was worth listening to all the way thru, much less listening to a second time, although Rockit Girl is sometimes worth a 2nd look, if you catch my drift.

So of course it is total coincidence that I am posting anything about music this week, and anyone would have to be bonkers to add any of the following to any kpop playlist...

My favorite discovery this year was the Bayraktar song which I have linked before
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=890z0skXQzI&rco=1

Close 2nd was: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - The Danish National Symphony Orchestra

Next were Riki Lindhome songs
Don't Google Mommy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm5fhMlQu-c
Middle Age Love - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3gUy40Stzg

You may remember her from Garfunkel and Oates, and you need to have heard their "Loophole" to fully appreciate "Don't Google Mommy". But for the love of God (or at least Jesus), don't play it at work. Their channel is https://www.youtube.com/@garfunkelandoates

I am knitting a lot these days. Last year's autumn, I decided to use my stash, and there was enough for a good handful of sweaters, so I had lots to do. Since it's Valentine's Day, I have been busy getting the HOT SOX ready after finishing and sending the crocodile sweater to a little girl. (I am looking forward to getting pictures of her in it 😍🐊 )
The one sox I managed to finish to today can be seen on my fan wall (as yet). I am a little proud of the chili, I made the pattern myself, screwed it up, and then half made-it-as-you-go'ed.

I have a suggestion to better support the awesome DB staff writers and recaps.
How about a virtual Tip Jar?
At the end of every article - there would be a link to tip the writers directly. 100% of tips to go directly to the authors.
We know they are paid with beans and love. How about we supplement it with cold hard ca$h?
Whatcha think?

It doesn't sound very fair for me. Every writer should be paid the same.

The number of comment changes a lot depending on the drama and we can't predict what drama will be successful or not.

Sure, but they could tip-share behind the scenes. The link doesn’t have to be their personal venmo or anything. It might be worth exploring since some folks aren’t able to do the monthly support.

Hi everyone, I'm still around! I've been busy with rehearsal for our community theatre production of Brigadoon and also coping with sociopolitical stuff (I am in the US and, due to my job, quite affected by what's going on). And, due to the aforementioned politics, I've been more strict with using my work computer for fun things, like posting on this website. I also haven't been watching any dramas, due to being so busy and also just not having anything that I really want to watch. But, I'm gonna try to watch Melo Movie and there are a few ones starting in March that intrigue me as well!

Yay community theatre, but sorry you're in the middle of the chaos. Sending much love and support to everyone with a government or government-adjacent job right now.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Is there something like pre-spring fever? On the weather forecast it remains dark, cold and grey. On the entertainment front a slump persist. At work it is the calm before the storm. Action kills anxiety, but having to wait for things makes that impossible.

I’m getting my new electric bike tomorrow, which is hopefully the start of more exercise, fresh air and outdoor activities.🚴🏻🚴🏻🚴🏻

It is also the starting signal in my agenda for a couple K-dramas I want to watch, and for work changes to finally happen. Two formations with exams, teaching newbies, moving to a new office building and finishing my own internship/back to work journey.

I will definitely complain about all this once it is upon me, but at least I will be finally dealing with it. Busy Spring schedule and Sunshine, you better catch up!💪🏻

Belated, but well-written, posting by New York Times on the passing of Barbie Hsu.

There IS a lot of news lately, but this was an oversight on the part of the Times. So many US readers check the Times as part of their news, and this was a big story.

I'm not in charge, but if they'd asked me, the story would have run much closer to her passing. She deserves that.

Another oversight:
There was the sudden death of another Chinese actor the same week of Barbie Hsu’s death, but news about his untimely departure was overshadowed majorly by the former and wasn’t reported by media until almost a week after his death. He was only in his late 20s, sigh

Sorry but I missed this story altogether. Please provide link?

I should clarify— I mean that the belated report of his death is an oversight of the industry, not specifically the NYT

Liang You Cheng, 27, passed from what seem to be the same causes as Barbie Hsu— influenza.

This article is from Feb. 7th, his death was on the 2nd day of the Lunar New Year (Jan. 30th). Yet, I’d rather read about Barbie Hsu’s death within same hour that reports began to circulate online 😢

I should clarify— I don’t think it’s a specific fault of the NYT, but the industry as a whole. It feels like they’re putting a price, a label, a class system on the “who’s its” of entertainment and picking and choosing who gets reported on first and then dumping everyone else to the wayside, when all lives are equal and matter 😡

The earliest article I can find about his death is on Feb. 5th when he’d passed on the 30th, and ofc, Barbie’s news is also tacked at the end of an article that should be solely about him

https://www.8days.sg/entertainment/asian/chinese-actor-liang-youcheng-died-thought-common-cold-influenza-840621

I’d read online about the news of Barbie THE SAME HOUR that reports began to circulate and float online. I’d read about the confirmation about her death the next morning. I didn’t even read nor hear anything about him until about a week ago sigh

This article about him isn’t even on a mainstream source, either. It’s 6th or 7th down the list on my Google search about him

Thank you. Difficult to accept with no family present at his passing. That's hard news.

It's embarrassing and it's maddening like you said. It's also incredibly head inducing because folks will make you think *you're* the crazy one.

I don't know if I mentioned it here or somewhere else but it kinda made wonder if this whole thing made people feel more empathetic about people in abusive relationships or who fall into cults cause my god, the gaslighting.

I know people reference 1984 alot and..

Reasons why I like My Love from the Star- A continuation from my fan space post ‘ Reasons I don’t like MLFTS’
The actors. Kim Soo Hyun. has a face the camera loves. He has a broad eye socket and defined lips, which means he can wear lighter makeup. (He also has very good hands, but at this early stage of his career no one had realised it yet I guess- we don’t see multiple hand close ups like we get later, eg in Queen of Tears.) Of the supporting cast- Yoo In-na is ethereal, and Ahn Jae-hyun is bright.
The story. , The thematic idea of a superpowered person watching and protecting you. There are a number of satisfying story beats. - Cheon Sung-yi gets rescued from a car off a cliff, from a thrown object, from a boat. ( She also gets treated for appendicitis and poisoning,as a part of the super-powered care, but those story beats verge on the ridiculous)
The emotions. The evocation of loss and return is powerful. The desperate feeling that Do Min-joo is going far away where he cannot be reached, and the satisfaction when he reappears. ( I know when I first watched this drama I cried cathartically from grief)
The filmography. The production makes good use of frozen moment/time slice effects. This would have been, and probably still is, a rare production effect for a tv drama. There are multiple scenes where Do Min joo is able to walk around or past people and rearrange objects. Of the scenes, the most beautiful is DMJ walking among snow flakes. The most emotionally charged is at the end, where DMJ reappears, stops time, and sweeps Song-Yi off her feet But he also uses the time stop to foil bad guys.
The people who replied to my original post ( in last weeks fan space if you want to find it) were people who did not like MLFTS. I didn't expect that. As I said last week, there were lots of things that I did not like, but things I like as well. Did anyone else appreciate the things I liked? Or did you think they were negatives?

As you’ve mentioned, the filmography was definitely a plus in addition to the acting— Shin Sung Rok’s villain in this still spooks me to this day and I consider him one of the best villains in (the other being Namgoong Min in GIRL WHO SEES SMELLS)—but everything else about it sort of fell flat to me in the sense that it still felt very run-of-the-mill formulaic “same plot, different delivery“ Kdrama and the acting—though not bad— wasn’t as gritty as can be to make me absolutely love the drama (unlike Cdramas that do the “same plot, different delivery” very well because the acting delivers):

- Stoic/ indifferent/ numb ML, check
- Super extra FL, check
- stupid in love 2nd ML, check
- unforgettable 2nd FL (not Yoo Inna’s fault necessarily), check
- overarching plot with mini plots slipped in to keep things interesting, check

The filmography was nice indeed, but I'm not gonna like the drama with the story I don't find compelling (tropes were fine, execution wasn't), characters I don't vibe with, performances I painfully cringed at and OST I absolutely loathed just for some pretty camera shots. Not sure if all that says more about the drama or myself - maybe both - but here's that. If that soothes the blow a little, I have pretty much the same opinion on most kdrama melo/romcom classics, MLFTS isn't any special)))

Given that I started this with all the things I Did Not Like about the drama, I don't think you need to soothe the blow at all. :) I was just a bit surprised at how Disliked it was- not what I expected.
And yes 'characters I don't vibe with, performances I painfully cringed at and OST I absolutely loathed' was all mentioned in my first list :)

I think it's one of the dramas that are more loved domestically rather than internationally - must be cultural thing. Like the show was such a raging success in SK because of PPL partially - I still remember articles of how every little thing FL wore there, down to her preferred lipstick shade, got sold out in minutes because everyone and their moms wanted to copy her and snag themselves a filthy rich pretty scholar too. I don't see the show having the same cultural impact globally, it ain't no WINTER SONATA lol)))

That's interesting about the ppl, because watching it the ppl does not hit me in the face. It's not constant Subway or Nescafe ( though I think Kopiko might make an appearance) It must be a lot of domestic ppl that is easy for me to ignore or miss. Or, yes, lipstick. Very easy for me to ignore- that is one of those fantasy dressing up thing people do in dramas :)

oh, and winter sonata " Not available in your region" so the reference passes me by. But I'm sure I understand what you mean.

I really like the drama, for many of the reasons you shared. I also thought there were a lot of funny scenes.

Sorry just saw your question. It's been a while since I re-watched it, but I thought some scenes with FLs younger brother interacting with ML were funny, the MLs father and FLs mother banter was funny, and also some of the flashbacks to when ML drank too much. (Now that I think about it, I remember more than I thought.)
What I enjoy about DB is that everyone enjoys or dislikes for different reasons.

I got a copy of Han Kang's novel, called in English We Do Not Part from the public library Wednesday. I started it yesterday when I was on public transport. It came out in Korea in 2021. I've only read a couple of chapters so far. It seems like a sequel to Human Acts, which I just finished recently. At least in part, it's about the psychological impact of immersing oneself in the "dark history" of human rights violations. I'm actually somewhat familiar with this--my ex-husband and my mom each did projects where they interviewed people who had lived through tough events for oral histories. My ex was documenting the movement for Black civil rights in the US and my mom took interviews from Holocaust survivors. I still remember my mom calling me at college because she had interviewed a survivor who jumped from a moving train when she was my age at the time.

But what really got me was the description of a person who had her fingers reattached and had to be, essentially, tortured to keep the nerves alive while she healed. Anyway I have a lot of thoughts about it but it's time for me to ring off. ♥

Oh no! I deleted because I messed up the html and then I was tired and was like, no one cares what I think.

The gist of my comment was that Human Acts is one of the few books that haunts me years after reading it. There are a couple other writers that have somewhat made similar emotional impressions with their works, Kazuo Ishiguro and Emily St John Mandel, but Han Kang's storytelling is particularly brutal though never gratuitously so. I am not ready to read We Do Not Part, but that should not stop me.

I didn't finish it. I read an entire other novel and part of a cookbook instead of reading the Han Kang book straight through. I just didn't have it in me today.

Though the other novel, The Ministry of Time, also contained allusions to the trauma of mass murder. I was already, because of the Han Kang novel's plot point about the friend's injury reminded me a lot of the beginning of Kindred by Octavia Butler. I feel like historical novels, especially ones featuring time travel, present some challenges for an author. Though I guess the Han Kang book is more magical realism. I don't know.

I forgot to mention this yesterday so I don't know if people will even see or comment on this but the superbowl halftime show.

Like it/dislike it, get it/don't get it, I'm not talking about that but one of the things that I liked that resulted from it was all the conversations and analysis. Because of Serena Williams's dance, I learned of a real black tap dancer who was a double amputee and an advocate for people with disability. It didn't even seem real and yet there it was it was on youtube and I saw his name mentioned somewhere else (Henry 'Crip' Heard).

As much as I lack of faith in humanity, sometimes I'm amazed by people's resilience and creativity.
