Burnmont

From Dragon Quest Wiki

Burnmont is a volcano located north of Emberdale in Dragon Quest VII.

Story[edit]

Past[edit]

Burnmont is a volcano reputed to be the home of the Father of the Flame and is a sacred site to the people of Emberdale. Just as the party finishes placing the fragments at the Shrine of Mysteries that sends them to the island, they receive a vision of the Gaffer and one of the villagers right before the volcano erupts violently. However, when they step out from the teleportal, the volcano is still dormant and the island is still safe, so they decide to make their way to the nearby village. When they first arrive, the volcano is off-limits to any visitors until the time of the Flaming Festival.

At the village, the party discusses the vision they saw with the Gaffer, the village chief of Emberdale. He assures them that Burnmont is in no danger of erupting and thinks they were simply spooked by the sight of the mountain. The Gaffer then invites the party to spend the night in the village in order to participate in the Flaming Festival the next day. The following morning, there is a commotion in the village as the fortune teller Palmela urges the people to heed her warnings that Burnmont will erupt at the end of the Return of Fire ritual. The Gaffer becomes disgruntled with her for spreading panic and fear in the villagers, declaring that the festival will go on as planned that night.

Palmela takes notice of the party, recognizing that they are adventurers, and invites them to her shop to discuss the developments. She tells them that they have to save Emberdale from destruction and asks them to investigate Burnmont since they will be able to enter once the Festival begins. That night, after the townspeople make their pilgrimage to Burnmont, the group is given their own flames to cast into the crater of the volcano. There, they run into Palmela and her assistant, Dora, and tells them they must venture into the depths of Burnmont to find out the cause of the disturbance.

She is able to heal the party's wounds or save their progress if needed, but they are running on limited time to complete their task. If the player takes too long to reach the depths of Burnmont and all the townspeople finish throwing their flames into the crater, the volcano will erupt as predicted and the party will be forced to restart back at the village inn.

At the depths of the volcano, the trio encounters the Glowering Inferno and a huge black flame. The fierce-looking monster mocks the people of Emberdale for worshiping a deity that he believes doesn't exist and even hold a festival in its honor. It states that it was entrusted with the flame by its demonic master and as soon as the Return of Fire ritual ends, magma will overflow and destroy the island and its inhabitants. The monster takes notice of the group and challenges them to a battle, but is eventually defeated. However, its death doesn't cause the black flame to disappear and it rises to the crater where the ritual is being performed. The party makes their way back up and rejoins with Palmela, explaining to her what happened in the volcano's depths. The fortune teller states that unless they figure out some method to get rid of the black flame, Emberdale will surely be destroyed. The Gaffer, having seen the error of his ways, implores Palmela to look into the future and find a way out of their predicament.

She heals the party's wounds and has a vision of a grubby man in a grubby house holding a vial of liquid, as well as the Hero. Palmela asks him if he knows who it is. The Hero's uncle, Pike, happens to match her description perfectly. The bottle that Pike is holding is the Wholly holy water, which will cause the black flame to disappear and save Emberdale. If the party doesn't already have the bottle with them, they must journey back to Estard in the present and retrieve it from Pike. With the Holy water in their possession, they sprinkle it on the black flame and extinguish it. Palmela then states that with the intervention of the Hero and his friends, the vision she had of Emberdale's doom won't come true anymore. The Gaffer then thanks the party and declares the end of the festival and celebrates the young adventurers as the saviors of their village.

Present[edit]

After the Almighty's supposed revival at the Cathedral of Light, the islands are sealed away once again. Sir Mervyn is able to help the party out despite being separated from them by climbing to the top of The Beacon and lights the sacred flames inside the Shrine of Mysteries using the power of the Guiding Light. The party goes through the teleportal and finds themselves at the summit of the Burnmont once again. The volcano is in a dire state as the lava has begun to disappear and it is not as hot as it used to be, causing the people of Emberdale to believe that something bad has happened to the Father of the Flame. Monsters have also begun to roam around, as well, since they have lost His protection.

The party journeys to Emberdale and makes quick work of the monsters that are attacking the villagers and makes a visit to the Gaffer's house, where he and Palmela are discussing the grim situation. They explain to the fortune teller that the lava has been extinguished from the mountain and she decides to accompany them to the depths of the Burnmont to find out what happened, since she needs their protection from monsters. Back at the Mont, the party watches one of the young men from the village fall into the crater and follows after him, journeying even deeper into the volcano than they did before. Palmela senses a mighty presence inside the mountain and the party finds that the lava hasn't disappeared after all since the Father of the Flame is merely hiding. They come across a sealed door that won't budge no matter what and Palmela telepathically sends a message to her assistant Dora to join them there.

The Fire Spirit grants the party the Fire Amulet.

As they wait for Dora, Palmela explains to the party that the Father of the Flame is merely one part of the Almighty and He split Himself into four parts before being completely destroyed by the Demon King after their battle. Each of those four parts ended up in charge of the four elements of the world—earth, water, fire, and wind. The Father of the Flame came to Burnmont since it was the most fiery place in the world and the locals began to worship Him. Just as the fortune teller finishes her story, Dora arrives with both the kindling oil and conflagration key which will allow them to open the sealed door. Behind the door, the group finds a pool of boiling lava and pours the kindling oil in to reawaken the Father of the Flame]]. He suddenly appears and states that His true name is the Fire Spirit and Palmela asks for His help unsealing the great darkness covering the land. However, the Fire Spirit states that He will only help those who challenge Him in battle and prove their worthiness.

After defeating Him in battle, the Fire Spirit states that He is impressed with humanity's strength and offers to lend His strength. But they will need to journey to other places throughout the land and awaken the other three spirits, as well. They also receive the Fire Amulet as a gift from the mighty spirit. The group then returns with Palmela to Emberdale and they part ways with her.
