Case studies on the implementation and use of database management systems: Installing the first database application

Published: 01 January 1979 Publication History

Abstract

The potential of database management systems for enhancing system support to managers and users while reducing design, structuring and maintenance problems is well known. Many database packages are available to assist those organizations pursuing this approach to improved data management. Furthermore, suitable guidelines exist to aid in determining whether database systems will help a particular enterprise. Selection criteria for specific system features have also been developed.
Once a decision has been made to invest in database systems, organizations face another dilemma: how to get started. In spite of the vast knowledge about these systems, little has been written about launching a database implementation effort. The first application is the most difficult and yet it is the one where mistakes and problems can be the most costly from the viewpoint of both users and systems staff members. The questions that arise from persons involved in database implementation are many and varied; all are probably important. In these situations, it would be helpful to be able to draw on experiences of others who have been through the implementation headaches. In this way, problems can be avoided by new users and more effective and satisfactory transitions achieved.
The purpose of this panel is to examine problems and concerns in installing the first database application. The panel members, each of whom is experienced in this area, will examine critical organizational and application issues surrounding the first implementation. Among the issues raised will be determining where to begin and how to select the first application. Also discussed will be overall implementation strategies, common mistakes, and what to watch out for and avoid. The intention is to let emerging database users draw on the actual experiences and frustrations of those who have already blazed a trail. This session should be of interest to both practitioners and researchers.
