Micro-level Data Analysis and Visualization of the Interrelation Between Confidence and Athletic Performance

Published: 24 May 2019 Publication History

Abstract

Studies in sport psychology have shown that confidence is one of the most critical mental skill for elite athletes. In this paper, we present a method to analyze and visualize the interrelation between confidence and athletic performance in professional tennis matches. Specifically, we have developed a method to estimate the relative confidence level of a tennis player based on his/her micro-level performance success. Our program then analyzes the interrelation between the athlete's relative confi- dence level with the player's subsequent performance metrics, such as unforced errors, forced errors, winners, serve directions, first-serve faults, double faults, aces, and rally lengths.
