Low-Power Bluetooth-Enabled Electrocardiogram (ECG) Devices: Design, Performance, and Applications

Published: 05 April 2024 Publication History

Abstract

With the growing demand for portable cardiac health monitoring and recognizing the limitations of existing portable electrocardiogram (ECG) devices in providing extended monitoring periods, this paper introduces a wireless ECG measurement system employing low-power Bluetooth transmission. An effective ECG monitoring system has been developed using low-power Bluetooth 5.0 technology. In this setup, a microcontroller unit (MCU) oversees the MAX3003 chip for the initial acquisition and preprocessing of human ECG data. Subsequently, the data is transmitted through the nRF52810 Bluetooth module to an upper-level computer for in-depth analysis and display. Leveraging the Bluetooth 5.0 BLE protocol stack structure and the judicious utilization of the local storage module W25Q128FV, superfluous power consumption is minimized, leading to an overall reduction in system power consumption. Experimental outcomes validate that our design proficiently identifies human ECG signals and characteristics, thereby accomplishing portable and low-power cardiac health monitoring.
