Educational Technology in Islamic Education: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

The use and development of technology in education is a hallmark of 21st-century learning. We need learning innovation in Islamic education using educational technology (EdTech). However, the scope of research studied in previous research related to using EdTech in Islamic education is relatively small. Therefore, this research aims to thoroughly explore the use and development of EdTech in Islamic education. This study used systematic literature review (SLR) analysis, which focused on the type of EdTech, the learning environment of Islamic education combined with EdTech, and aspects of competencies developed. The source of data in this study was the Scopus Database. From a total of 185 documents published in 2009–2023 that were filtered by applying inclusion and exclusion criteria in three different rounds, 13 articles were analyzed in full-text form. This study showed that there were several types of EdTech in Islamic education combined with various learning environments with different competency development objectives, including the development of knowledge, skills, character, and educational administration. The learning approach and competency aspects developed with EdTech in Islamic education have been adapted to the needs of 21st-century educational skills. The study provides several implications for researchers and practitioners and provides state-of-the-art insight. The results of this study can provide new knowledge and insight into the use of EdTech in Islamic education so that it can be used as a reference for teachers, students, and educational institutions to improve the quality of Islamic education.
