System Design for Flexibility

Published: 04 March 2002 Publication History

Abstract

With the term flexibility, we introduce a new design dimensionof an embedded system that quantitatively characterizesits feasibility in implementing not only one, but possiblyseveral alternative behaviors. This is important whendesigning systems that may adopt their behavior during operation,e.g., due to new environmental conditions, or whendimensioning a platform-based system that must implementa set of different behaviors. A hierarchical graph model isintroduced that allows to model flexibility and cost of a systemformally. Based on this model, an efficient explorationalgorithm to find the optimal flexibility/cost-tradeoff-curveof a system using the example of the design of a family ofSet-Top boxes is proposed.
