Multimedia information management and optical disk technologies as a basis for advanced information retrieval
Abstract
This paper deals with the connection between multimedia information processing (e.g multimedia document handling) and the use of optical disk technologies (e.g. CD-ROM or WORM) to construct modern information retrieval systems based on small-computer systems (e.g. PCs or minicomputers). In addition to discussing a multimedia document model and presenting available optical disk technologies, the paper delimits special requirements for developing multimedia systems and presents a prototype (MuBIS-Pro) of such a system which is designed for creation, storage, and retrieval of multimedia documents, which integrates conventional magnetic disk storage technologies as well as optical ones, and which has been demonstrated at the Hanover Fair CeBIT87.
