Integrated image management on a local area network

Published: 21 March 1988 Publication History

Abstract

Presented here is the architecture of a prototype of image system, under development at the IBM Rome Scientific Center.
The system is intended to manage "image-data" in an integrated way and to address new problems coming from image management. Optical disks are used to store large amount of data as an image system requires. Cause of the high number of devices needed by an image system, it is very useful to distribute them on several nodes of a Local Area Network. The main peculiarities of the architecture are distributed functions, multi-user environment, interactivity, modularity and non-procedurality (the user has only to describe "what" has to be done, rather than "how" to do it).
