Adding analysis tools to image databases: facilitating research in geography & art history

Published: 21 March 1988 Publication History

Abstract

As technological developments make the storage and retrieval of digitized images possible, database designers should give serious consideration to providing the user with routines not just for image retrieval, but for image analysis as well. This paper describes two projects currently underway at UC Berkeley to incorporate image processing capabilities into information retrieval systems. It explains how routines such as zooming, windowing, dynamic color changes, image overlay, and image subtraction can be used to study and compare maps, works of art, or other images, and explains how the widespread implementation of these routines might change patterns of research in these areas.
