Digital democracy: an analysis of resources and acceptance

Published: 17 May 2016 Publication History

Abstract

Technological advances have influenced the relationship between government and citizen. In this scenario, the Digital Democracy theme that encourages the state to adopt strategies that enable the performance of the citizen not as a client of the information provided, but as a catalyst for democracy, arises. Parallel to this, changes can be observed with regard to the understanding of citizenship. However, digital democracy is a phenomenon that requires clarification both in relation to the various resources available as in the acceptance of these new possibilities for social participation. In this article, an exploratory study that sought to understand this phenomenon will be described. The study was conducted from three lines of action: literature review, analysis of resources available and survey research. In the survey, 220 people were interviewed via an online questionnaire. Research shows that there are different initiatives converge to similar degrees of digital democracy. Moreover, the survey showed a consistent level of acceptance of the use of technology in this context.
