The Knight of the Cart is far from being a straightforward knightly adventure. In this essay, we propose to uncover its underlying folktale structure, which in turn leads to a comparison with a tale in the same generic class, having an analogous subject matter (matiere) but opposite orientation (san) —the Indian epic Ramayana.
