Enhancing Needs Discovery in Children with Type I Diabetes through Collage Techniques

Abstract

Engaging children in Interaction Design user research through interviews and focus group methods is constrained by differences in age-related verbal skills, cognitive capacities, and power dynamics. In the current research, we involved children with Type I diabetes (T1DM) in co-design workshops using the Collage technique to explore their perspectives on an “ideal day with diabetes” and challenges related to diabetes management. Overall, the Collage technique has shown its potential for understanding children's needs diagnosed with medical conditions. Results from three co-design workshops indicated that collages helped us make sense of the interview and distinguish the most important concepts, such as the importance of time. Collage proposed topics for more meaningful discussion and provided detailed information on children's latent needs for possible future technology. Co-design workshops also highlighted useful insights for moderators, such as the need to carefully plan group work, actively initiate discussion, and plan backup activities.
