Metaverse and Edu-Metaverse: A Review of China's Literature and the Implications for Future Education

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive review of China's research on the Metaverse and its implications for education, known as the Edu-Metaverse. Utilising the literature analysis method, 37 authoritative and widely-recognised articles were selected from the CNKI database. Two mind-maps were developed to illustrate the overall picture of the research foci. Based on these mind-maps, this paper expounds on the features of the Metaverse and the Edu-Metaverse from three perspectives: combination and integration, immersiveness and interactive ecology. It demonstrates how the Metaverse enriches and facilitates learning and teaching, particularly in immersive and experiential learning, innovative teaching methodologies, gamified learning, personalised and collaborative learning, and vocational education. In addition to theoretical studies, this paper also investigates empirical studies on the Metaverse in China to present a comprehensive overview of China's Metaverse research.
