Inpatient Experiences of Long-Term Monitoring: The Case of EEG

Published: 13 November 2024 Publication History

Abstract

This paper examines the patient experience of long-term monitoring through the case of electroencephalograms (EEG), devices used to diagnose neurological conditions by recording brain activity. During such long-term monitoring, patients are admitted to the hospital, physically connected to devices, and closely monitored for extended periods of time. Through twenty-five interviews with people with epilepsy who underwent long-term EEGs, we unpack the complex patient experience of inpatient monitoring. We find that inpatient monitoring enabled participants to learn about and reflect on their chronic illness, but it also amplified participants' anxiety and frustration. We discuss contributions to HCI research on long-term monitoring and the lived experience of epilepsy, and present design implications to support patients during monitoring.
